What Wizards revealed at PAX West
During the August 29 event, Wizards of the Coast walked attendees through the Spider-Man set and showed many of the main-set Spider-Man cards. In total, reporters were shown a number of cards associated with Spider-Man and his rogues gallery; the set’s previews included villains such as Green Goblin, Venom, Electro, and more.

Release date and scope
The Spider-Man Universes Beyond set has an official release date of September 26. Furthermore, Wizards confirmed that Spider-Man is the starting point for a wider Marvel collaboration, meaning more Marvel content will follow in Universes Beyond.
As head designer Mark Rosewater said, “We luckily get to do a whole bunch of Marvel, but we’ll start with Spider-Man.”
Core mechanics by color pair
The set divides its mechanical themes across two-color pairings. Each pair introduces or highlights a gameplay idea tied to Spider-Man characters and stories.
Green–White (heroes)
Green–White focuses on the Spider-Verse heroes, including Pavitr Prabhakar (Spider-Man India). Moreover, this pair introduces Web-Slinging, a mechanic that can reduce a creature’s cost when you return another tapped creature to your hand.
Black–Red (villain focus)
Black–Red introduces Mayhem, which allows players to play cards for reduced cost from the graveyard if those cards were discarded the same turn. The pair’s flavor centers on Green Goblin and other Spider-Man antagonists.
White–Blue (modified creatures)
White–Blue emphasizes “modified” creatures — that is, creatures that interact with equipment, aura enchantments, and +1/+1 counters. Designers included creatures built to take advantage of those modifications.
Red–Green (big spells)
Red–Green rewards casting large, high-cost spells. In particular, there are payoffs for casting spells with converted mana cost four or greater.
Blue–Black (villains and connive)
Blue–Black focuses on villains and brings back the Connive mechanic, which lets you draw and potentially grow creatures. As principal game designer Jadine Klomparens put it, “Conniving represents the plotting nature of villains… showing off the sneaky things villains might be doing.”
Spectacular Spider-Man and variant art
Wizards revealed a premium creature called Spectacular Spider-Man that appears in seven different visual variants. Each variant references a distinct moment from Spider-Man comics history, such as the black suit from Secret Wars and the “bag man” appearance.

Furthermore, the set includes a range of showcase-style variant arts in booster packs — from full-art pieces to designs meant to mimic comic-book pages.
Bonus Sheet reprints
The Spider-Man set also includes Bonus Sheet cards. These are existing Magic reprints using Spider-Man comic art. For example, the Jack Kirby cover of Spider-Man’s first comic appearance is used for Heroic Intervention. In addition, Wizards placed at least one visual joke tied to a classic villain; as Rosewater said, “Making a ‘Shock’ with shocker was one of the things we had to do.”
