Alien: Earth’s Tentacled Eyeball (Species 64) Upstages the Xenomorphs — and Causes Isaac’s Death

In episode 6 of Alien: Earth, a small tentacled eyeball creature identified as t. ocellus (also called Species 64) interacts with other specimens in the Neverland facility and plays a visible role in a containment incident that leads to a character’s death. The episode is titled “The Fly”, and it also features a colony of bewinged, fly-like aliens taken from the wreckage of the USCSS Maginot.

Episode 6 summary and key events

Episode 6, titled “The Fly”, centers on a group of small, winged creatures that were taken from the wreckage of the USCSS Maginot by CEO Boy Kavalier (played by Samuel Blenkin) and placed at Neverland, the island research facility. The flies receive limited screen time until this episode, where their feeding and containment are major plot points.

During a feeding sequence, Isaac (the human–robot hybrid, played by Kit Young) enters an underground lab to place food in the flies’ enclosure. After the usual feeding slot breaks, Isaac unlocks the door and puts the tray in by hand. He wedges his foot in the doorway to stop the door from locking, but while he is in the cell, Species 64 — which had been near the glass — strikes the enclosure. Isaac falls, becomes trapped inside the cage when the door locks, and is subsequently killed by the flies.

On-screen behavior of Species 64

Species 64 is shown as a small, tentacled, eyeball-like creature that, in the current episodes, is manipulating the body of a sheep. It makes physical contact with its containment glass in multiple scenes.

Specifically, the creature smacks its tentacles against the glass in episode 5 to get the attention of medical officer Chibuzo (played by Karen Aldridge). Then in episode 6, it again strikes the glass and, shortly afterward, Isaac trips and becomes trapped in the flies’ enclosure. These on-screen actions are presented in sequence across the two episodes.

Production notes and creator comments

Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley has said that the creature’s glass-striking behavior in episode 5 was intentional and aimed at aiding other captive creatures. Additionally, the series places these events at Neverland, the facility where multiple alien species are stored and studied.

The flies were described in the episode as having been seized from the USCSS Maginot and brought to Neverland by Boy Kavalier’s team. Key cast members in these scenes include Kit Young as Isaac and Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier.
