What Are the Trials of Aql?

The Trials of Aql are unique missions that test your survival skills and knowledge of Arrakis. Each trial is tied to a specific altar, hidden in caves or atop rocky formations. Completing them not only deepens your understanding of the Fremen, but also rewards you with new crafting options and sometimes powerful abilities. Here’s how to track them down.

First Trial Location – Hagga Basin South

Your first trial is part of the main quest, “Echoes from the Past.” Head to the largest rock formation in the southern part of Hagga Basin South. Approach from the west and look for a path leading up to an opening on your right—this is the entrance to Mihna Cavern. Once inside, interact with the altar and remember: hide from the giant eyes as you make your way through!

Second Trial Location – Eastern Vermilius Gap

The second altar waits in Eastern Vermilius Gap, southeast of the biggest rock formation, in a place called the Deep Struggle. Enter from the east, pass through a gate with a blue Eye symbol, and head up the stairs. Use your knife to open the path, then descend into a hole. Completing this trial unlocks the Static Compactor schematic for collecting Flour Sand.

Third Trial Location – Western Vermilius Gap

For the third trial, travel to the edge of the Western Vermilius Gap. Be ready for a fight—three enemies, two with shields, guard the entrance. After defeating them, follow the cave corridor to the altar. But here’s a twist: the Emperor’s forces have destroyed this altar, so there’s no actual trial to complete.

Fourth Trial Location – Hollow Hammer, Eastern Vermilius Gap

Climb the Hollow Hammer, the tallest rock in Eastern Vermilius Gap. Start from the south, find some stairs, and follow the corridors to the altar. Completing this trial gives you access to the Prescient state (unlocked with Spice). Be prepared for a battle inside!

Fifth Trial Location – Hagga Rift

The fifth altar hides in Hagga Rift. Enter from the southwest, pass the House Dyvetz Representative base, cross a bridge, and head north. Look for a large rectangular pillar-like rock. At its base, jump into the hole to find the altar and finish the fifth trial.

Sixth Trial Location – Jabal Eifrit Al-sharq

Head northeast in Jabal Eifrit Al-sharq and look for Slave Camps. In front of one, you’ll spot a sealed door to Devil’s Eye Cavern. Inside, turn left, then right, and follow the corridor. This altar is also destroyed—interact with the recorder to complete the quest.

Seventh Trial Location – The Red Maw, Higga Rift

This one’s tricky! Find The Red Maw cave in Higga Rift, near CHOAM Mineral Extraction Facility #6. Enter from the south, go north, then west, and look for the cave marked by a strong red light and a nearby enemy camp. Fight your way inside, go left and up, then right in the main hall to reach the seventh altar and unlock the Stilltent schematic.

Eighth Trial Location – Eastern Shield Wall, Mysa Tarill

The final trial, “The Footsteps of the Fremen,” is found in the Eastern Shield Wall north of Mysa Tarill. The entrance is marked by a big blue symbol. Be ready for a long challenge filled with puzzles and tough enemies. Bring plenty of ammo, healing kits, and—of course—water.

Pro Tips for Surviving the Trials

Don’t forget: Use the “View Trial Location” in the Journey menu for image hints, but remember—the exact map spot won’t be marked, so keep your eyes peeled! And always watch out for sandworms. Good luck out there, and may Shai-Hulud be with you!
