Atomic Heart Devs Announce The Cube: Wild MMO Shooter Set on a Rotating Battleground

Ready for something truly different in the world of online shooters? The team behind Atomic Heart is working on a brand new MMO called The Cube, and it’s not your usual battleground. Imagine a gigantic, floating, ever-rotating cube where gravity, lighting, and even your sense of direction are constantly being tested. Sounds wild? That’s just the beginning.
- New MMO shooter from Atomic Heart creators
- Unique battleground: a massive, shape-shifting cube
- Intention to “troll flat-earthers” with the game’s design
- Story-driven experience with RPG elements
- Set in the Atomic Heart universe, but accessible to newcomers
The Cube: Not Your Average Arena
Why a cube? According to Mundfish CEO Robert Bagratuni, “We want to troll the guys who believe our Earth is a plane.” But there’s more to it. The cube’s design brings unpredictable gameplay, with sunlit tops, shadowy bottoms, and twilight sides. Bagratuni adds, “This concept gives so much variability of what you see, how the settings change, and how the lighting changes. Plus, it really plays with your brain; how you perceive the experience.”
As you fight and explore, you’ll find yourself running along the sides and even the bottom of the cube, sometimes with a vertical horizon. The developers spent a year and a half creating a custom split-rendering system to handle the real-time rotation and movement of thousands of objects online. Bagratuni calls it a “monumental technological task,” but they’re “super proud” of what they’ve achieved.
What Happens on The Cube?
So what can players expect? The Summer Game Fest reveal trailer shows a world packed with players, bizarre monsters (like a giant tumor with claws and a tree with a birdhouse head), and some familiar faces from Atomic Heart. The Cube isn’t just about shooting—there are RPG elements, a story, and deep character progression to keep you hooked.
Bagratuni promises, “The experience of The Cube will definitely be story-driven and not just raids, grinds, and things like that. We want to make sure that there is deep character progression and you can develop your character in different directions, thus creating a character build that is super tailored to how you want to experience The Cube.”
Atomic Heart Universe, But Open for Everyone
The Cube is set in the same universe as Atomic Heart, so fans will notice some familiar lore and maybe even a cameo from Granny Zina. But don’t worry if you haven’t played Atomic Heart. As Bagratuni explains, “It is not necessary or super important to play Atomic Heart to understand what The Cube is. Though of course, narratively speaking, The Cube is a very important part of Atomic Heart’s world and it’s very interconnected with its events.”
While the team is keeping some details secret for now, they promise more info as launch approaches. For now, The Cube stands out as a fresh, bold take on the MMO genre, combining wild physics, a mind-bending setting, and story-rich gameplay. As Bagratuni sums up, “Crazy things are happening there.”
