Become Invincible: New TTRPG Adds Bloody Fights, Witty Banter and High‑School Drama — Kickstarter Sept. 23

Free League Publishing is turning Robert Kirkman’s Invincible into a tabletop roleplaying game. The game, Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying, uses the Year Zero engine and launches a Kickstarter campaign on Sept. 23. Meanwhile, fans can try a free quickstart adventure that recreates one of the comic’s most dramatic early moments.

Game overview

The tabletop game adapts the 144-issue story arc of Invincible, focusing on character progression and narrative beats. According to Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying designer and D&D Beyond founder Adam Bradford, “The thing that stands out to me as so ideal for adapting [Invincible] to a tabletop role-playing game is the idea of progression.”

Further, the rules use the Year Zero engine, the same system behind other Free League titles. For those who want the technical reference, the Year Zero standard document is available online.

Combat, gore and banter

The game aims to capture both the brutal fights and the lighter, comic-book moments. To that end, designers created a critical hit table that mirrors the series’ bloody clashes: outcomes range from torn costumes to fatal head trauma, depending on the severity of the hit. “It was a challenge, but also a fun one to make it feel like not only a superhero game, but the Invincible superhero game. That means it’s darker, it’s bloodier,” Härenstam said.

At the same time, the designers added a mechanical system for in-combat banter. This system lets characters mock opponents to weaken them, reflecting the tone of superhero comics and Invincible’s lighter moments. “Sometimes you’ll play with players and groups where they’re going to throw in the banter whether you want them to or not,” Bradford said. “This is a big part of superhero comics, it’s a big part of Invincible, and this is a way to kind of mechanically incentivize that and prompt players that this is a viable option while you’re in combat because this is going to help you capture that feel.”

Quickstart, Kickstarter and release plan

Free League will launch the game’s Kickstarter campaign on Sept. 23. The developer plans a Gen Con 2026 release for the full boxed starter set, but you can try the system now through a free quickstart adventure.

See the Kickstarter campaign.

The quickstart is set shortly after a major comic event: Omni-Man kills the Guardians of the Globe, injures Invincible in a fight, then leaves Earth. With the world’s top heroes gone, player characters step in to fill the gap. The starter scenario includes prebuilt sheets for Atom Eve, Monster Girl and Rex Splode, each designed for different battlefield roles — Eve uses barriers to control space, Monster Girl is built for brute defense, and Rex Splode offers other combat options.

Extras, art and stretch goals

The Kickstarter lists stretch goals including two digital bonus adventures — one centered on Atlantis and another on Midnight City — and additional campaign frameworks that range from street-level noir to cosmic epics. The books and starter set will feature art from Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, pulling directly from the comic’s visual style.

Bradford highlighted one special stretch goal: a limited run of Invincible #1 with a new cover by Todd Nauck (ink) and Matt Herms (color) that shows Mark playing the roleplaying game with family and friends. “As a huge comic book fan, Invincible is my favorite series,” Bradford said. “I believe I have every variant cover for Invincible #1 so it’s going to be another one that I will proudly add to the collection if we can unlock it.”

Where to get it

For now, download the free quickstart to try an hour-long introductory chapter called Metro Mayhem. Then, if you want the full boxed set, back the project when the Kickstarter goes live on Sept. 23.

Also, the Invincible animated series is currently available on Prime Video, which provides additional context for the game’s tone and story.
