What to expect from Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 changes the series formula in a few clear ways, while also keeping its core loot-and-shoot loop intact.

First, the game is fully open-world rather than a set of interconnected sandbox areas. Second, at launch there are four playable Vault Hunters, each with distinct action skills.

  • Vex, the Siren — uses space-based magic to clone herself and summon familiars.
  • Harlowe, the Gravitar — uses anti-gravity tech to put enemies in stasis or to deal damage.
  • Rafa, the Exo-Soldier — can wield a variety of extra weapons through his action skills.
  • Amon, the Forgeknight — a big, strong close-combat fighter.

Beyond those changes, the game still centers on collecting gear and defeating enemies in a loop of combat and loot. Early previews note that while many systems have been updated, the familiar Borderlands core gameplay remains.
