Borderlands 4 Secret: Get a Legendary Gun for Just 1 Cash — Follow the Vend of the Line Treasure Hunt

Want a nearly free legendary gun in Borderlands 4? The “Vend of the Line” side quest sends you on a short treasure hunt to find the Legendary Vending Machine. You’ll talk to Penelope’s projection, check five vending machines for codes, follow a powered wire, then fight a boss vending machine to claim one legendary item for one cash.

‘Vend of the Line’ quest location in Borderlands 4

Start the quest by finding Penelope Streams’ drone projection beside a vending machine in Carcadia. It’s northwest of the Carcadia waypoint, so head that way from spawn or your nearest fast travel point.

The mission is a normal-difficulty side quest. In return you get XP, cash, and a guaranteed legendary weapon if you finish it. Also, because the quest asks you to visit several spots, you might combine it with other activities while you’re in those areas.

The quest works like a treasure hunt. You must inspect five vending machines, read their codes, then use the correct sequence of sells or buys to unlock the final location. Codes use dollar-sign colors: green = uncommon, blue = rare, purple = epic, orange = legendary. Also, a slash through the dollar sign means “sell”; no slash means “buy” (or buyback).

First vending machine

Right where you meet Penelope is the first machine. Go behind it when the objective says “Inspect Machine” to see the code: green, green, blue, blue. So you need to sell two uncommons, then two rares.

After doing that, the other three machine locations will appear on your map.

Second vending machine

The second machine sits on an upper floor of a building southwest of Carcadia. You may need to grab drops or buy items from nearby vendors so you have the right rarities on hand: one purple, one green, and two blue.

First, power the machine by flipping a generator in the building’s upper area. Then look around the back — climb the small structure beside the machine and jump over the wall. Peer through a small opening to read the code: green, purple, blue, green.

All four dollar signs here have no slash, so you must buy those items. The machine won’t list items at first, though. To make it show them, sell one green, one purple, one blue, then one green item in that order, then use the Buyback menu to purchase them back in the same order.

Third vending machine

Find the third machine in Crumblehall, southeast of the second machine. It’s lying over a man on the ground in a small camp.

This one doesn’t ask you to buy or sell. Instead, follow the arrows painted on the back of the machine: climb the west stairs, jump to a broken ladder, then follow the higher platform to a window with an arrow. The code inside is purple, purple, orange, orange.

Pause briefly to see the scene with the man under the machine before you move on.

Fourth vending machine

The fourth machine sits in Lopside, south of the previous sites. If you’ve unlocked the Makeshift Chalet Safehouse, teleport there and head east.

To interact, you must hit the machine (melee or shoot it) to make the Vault Gatherer scout leave. Then crouch and slip through an opening on the left side of the machine’s building to reach the back and read the code: green, purple, blue, purple. Sell items matching those colors in order to proceed.

Fifth vending machine

The fifth machine is east of Carcadia but you should use the main road from the south. Fast travel to the Rustical Hurl Silo, then take the main road northeast toward Dusty Dangler.

Clear the enemies in the area if needed (they drop guns you can sell). The machine sits on a porch; jump behind it to read the code: green, blue, purple, orange. Sell items in that order, starting with green and ending with orange.

Where to find the Legendary Vending Machine in Borderlands 4

Once you finish the fifth machine, follow the highlighted “powered wire” that appears on your HUD. It leads northeast of Dusty Dangler, down to an area where Vault Gatherers are opening a door.

Enter the opened area and follow the path to an arena with the Legendary Vending Machine. You’ll trigger a short exchange and then fight the boss — Vend Zane — a violent vending machine that shoots guns at you and spawns smaller bomb-machines.

After you kill Vend Zane, interact with the Legendary Vending Machine. Every item it offers costs one cash, but you may only take one item: the quest ends and the machine becomes inaccessible. Pick carefully.

That’s the full run: find Penelope’s drone, read five codes, use sells/buys as instructed, follow the powered wire, beat the boss, and claim your single almost-free legendary. Good luck, and bring backup ammo — Vend Zane hits hard.
