Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gets a free “major” update — new area, brutal bosses, costumes and PC handheld support

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive have announced a free, major game update that adds a new area, fresh boss fights, costumes, language support and other additions — and the studio calls the update a *thank you* to fans after strong sales and streaming numbers.
Update overview
Sandfall and Kepler say a major game update is in development for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The studio frames the update as a gesture of gratitude, and it will be available for free on all platforms. In addition, the team has already released new artwork to preview what’s coming.
What’s included
The update adds a variety of late-game content and quality-of-life improvements. Specifically, the developer listed the following items as part of the free update:
- A new playable environment with new enemy encounters and “surprises to discover.”
- Challenging, new boss battles aimed at late-game players.
- New costumes for each member of the Expedition to expand customization.
- New text and UI localizations into Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian — bringing the total supported languages to 19.
- Additional unspecified surprises that the studio says fans can look forward to.
Moreover, developer comments indicate technical improvements will continue. For example, recent patches added a Battle Retry Prompt so players can immediately re-enter a boss fight after failing, and the team says it regularly adjusts its roadmap based on player feedback.
Team quotes
Creative director Guillaume Broche described the update as a “‘thank you’ to [the game’s] fans for their support.”
Broche also said: “The response to our game has been nothing short of incredible. We spent years working on our dream project, and to know it has resonated with fans around the world in such a powerful way is both wonderful and overwhelming,” Broche said in a statement. “We’re so grateful to our fans for their love of the world we created, for sharing their own fan art and music covers, for wearing their best Baguette cosplays to conventions, and for being incredibly supportive of our game.”
COO and producer Francois Meurisse mentioned PC “handheld compatibility” as part of the update and said, “I think fans will enjoy having these new moments with their beloved characters,” Meurisse said. He also told the studio press that the update is expected in the “upcoming month[s].”
CTO and lead programmer Tom Guillermin said, “We keep listening to the feedback that people make as they play the game, and we try to include that [feedback] on our roadmap.”
Release window and platforms
The update does not yet have a firm release date, but the team expects it to arrive in the upcoming month[s]. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and the update will be free across those platforms.
Artwork and milestones
The announcement included new artwork showing scattered children’s toys and other details fans may recognise from deep in the game world.
Sandfall and Kepler also revealed the game has sold more than 5 million copies across platforms since its April release. The soundtrack has amassed over 333 million track streams across platforms, spent “over 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical & Classical Crossover Album charts within that timeframe,” and reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top 100 Albums Chart in nine countries.
