Command Your Own Spaceship: Magic’s Edge of Eternities Set Launches Epic Space Adventure

Your Commander Can Now Be a Spaceship in Magic’s Edge of Eternities

Magic: The Gathering is blasting off into space with its upcoming set Edge of Eternities, arriving on August 1. This sci-fi twist brings fresh mechanics, new factions, and the return of some classic foes to the game.

  • Introduction of spacecraft as a new card subtype with unique “station” mechanic
  • Legendary vehicles and spacecraft can now be used as Commanders
  • New planets lands with charge counters unlocking powerful abilities
  • Return of fan-favorite creatures like Slivers and Eldrazi with new twists
  • Fresh art inspired by ‘70s sci-fi and space exploration themes

Spaceships Take Command

Since 2016’s Kaladesh, Magic has had vehicles—artifacts that need to be crewed to become creatures. Now, spacecraft are joining the fleet with a brand-new “station” mechanic. Instead of tapping creatures each turn to crew, spacecraft gain charge counters equal to the power of the tapped creature. Once they hit a threshold, they transform into artifact creatures permanently.

Take the legendary spaceship The Seriema: when it enters the battlefield, it lets you search your library for a legendary creature to add to your hand. After reaching seven charge counters, it becomes a 5/5 flying creature that protects other tapped legendary creatures from destruction. Plus, legendary vehicles and spacecraft can now serve as Commanders! Of course, if you prefer a more traditional option, you can pick Sami, the cat-loving human artificer captain of The Seriema, who can create robot tokens.

Roy Graham, Wizards of the Coast story lead, describes Sami as “a consummate con artist, scoundrel and ne’er do well.” Author Seth Dickinson has been crafting the story around Sami, the mysterious Endstone artifact, and a holy war in the Sothera system—Magic’s most complex and longest narrative yet.

New Planets and Powerful Lands

Planets are a fresh land type introduced in Edge of Eternities, each tied to one of Magic’s five colors. Inspired by iconic lands like Tolarian Academy, these planets use the “station” mechanic to gather up to 12 charge counters. Once charged, they unleash massive, game-changing effects.

As Magic play design lead Andrew Brown puts it, “We can give you these massive, awesome effects if we send you on a little, tiny quest.” This adds an exciting layer of strategy and progression to land cards.

Familiar Faces and New Mechanics

Edge of Eternities isn’t just about new stuff; it also welcomes back some familiar characters. The scheming artificer and planeswalker Tezzeret appears in a colorless version called Tezzeret, Cruel Captain, designed to fit more Commander decks. “He’s come to a setting well suited to his talents,” Graham says. “He sees limitless opportunity to make himself anew as a power to be reckoned with in this corner of the multiverse.”

The set also revives Slivers and introduces a new Llurgoyf variant with a sci-fi twist. Plus, the ancient Eldrazi—space-faring horrors from the Blind Eternities—return with new abilities like warp. Warp lets you cast Eldrazi cards for a cheaper cost, but they exile at the end of your turn and can be recast later for full cost, embodying their swift movement across space.

Another new mechanic, void, triggers kicker effects if a spell was warped or if a nonland permanent left the battlefield that turn, emphasizing the harshness of space. The set also introduces lander tokens, which you sacrifice to fetch basic lands tapped, representing the spirit of exploration.

Collectible Art and Sci-Fi Vibes

Fans can look forward to stunning new art embracing the science fiction theme. Alongside borderless basic lands, there are cards inspired by vintage tourism posters and ‘70s pulp sci-fi novel covers, where the text integrates seamlessly with the imagery.
