Dungeons & Dragons Brings Back Classic Greyhawk Setting with New Organized Play at Gen Con

Dungeons & Dragons is making a nostalgic return to one of its original worlds with a fresh organized play campaign launching at Gen Con this weekend. The Legends of Greyhawk campaign invites players to dive into the iconic setting created by D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, promising a streamlined experience focused on “less rules, more fun.”

  • New organized play campaign set in Greyhawk debuts at Gen Con
  • Players start at level 1 and progress to level 3 through multiple adventures
  • Free D&D Beyond Basic Rules required to join, with perks for account holders
  • Campaign will evolve based on player decisions and expand to other conventions
  • Additional Gen Con events spotlight Forgotten Realms and new starter sets

Adventure Through the Birthplace of D&D

Legends of Greyhawk takes players back to the roots of Dungeons & Dragons by exploring the classic Greyhawk setting, which was revitalized for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. At Gen Con, the largest gaming convention in North America founded by Gary Gygax in 1967, multiple adventures will run across different regions of Greyhawk.

Players begin their journey at level 1 and will reach level 3 after completing at least three adventures. To participate, all you need is the free D&D Beyond Basic Rules. Those with D&D Beyond accounts get extra bonuses like tradeable magic item cards, adding a fun collectible element to the experience.

Campaign Evolves with Player Choices

The Legends of Greyhawk campaign is currently in its beta phase and will be available at various conventions throughout the year before officially launching for organized play in 2026. What makes this campaign special is that player decisions made in these early adventures will influence the future storyline and how the Greyhawk world unfolds globally.

More Than Just Greyhawk at Gen Con

Greyhawk isn’t the only focus at Gen Con this year. On July 31 at 3 pm, there’s a panel offering a sneak peek at the upcoming Heroes of the Forgotten Realms and Adventures in the Forgotten Realms books set to release later in 2024.

Additionally, attendees can get hands-on with the new Heroes of the Borderlands starter set, which is designed to appeal to board game enthusiasts. It features plenty of miniatures and cards alongside easy-to-run adventures, making it a great entry point for players new to tabletop RPGs.
