Spooky season is officially here, and this week brings a mix of horror, action and comedy to streaming and VOD. For example, Hulu’s new werewolf thriller ties into a returning supermoon premise, while HBO Max adds the Philippou brothers’ new A24 horror. New on AppleTV+

The Lost Bus is now on AppleTV+. It’s a survival drama directed by Paul Greengrass, running about 2 hours and 10 minutes. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as a bus driver who must get a group of kids and their teacher (America Ferrera) to safety during the 2018 Camp Fire in California. Werewolves is streaming on Hulu. It’s an action-horror movie directed by Steven C. Miller and runs about 1 hour and 34 minutes. The cast includes Frank Grillo, Katrina Law and Ilfenesh Hadera. One year after a supermoon turned people into werewolves, nearly a billion people died; now the celestial event is returning, and scientists and the military try to find a cure while civilians hide from the rampaging creatures.

New on Paramount Plus

Fight or Flight landed on Paramount Plus. This action-comedy directed by James Madigan runs about 1 hour and 42 minutes. Josh Hartnett stars as a disgraced Secret Service agent who must catch a hacker known as the Ghost aboard a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, while assassins on the plane complicate the mission.

The Naked Gun reboot is also on Paramount Plus. Directed by Akiva Schaffer, this 1 hour and 25 minute spoof stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., with Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser in the cast. The plot involves tech mogul Richard Cane (Danny Huston) and a group of billionaires plotting bad things, and the film aims for rapid-fire spoof comedy.

Honey Don’t is streaming on Peacock. Directed by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, this queer neo-noir runs about 1 hour and 29 minutes. V/H/S/Halloween is available on Shudder. It’s the eighth found-footage anthology entry and runs about 1 hour and 55 minutes. The film intercuts five Halloween-themed shorts directed by Bryan M. Ferguson, Casper Kelly and Micheline Pitt-Norman, with segments featuring a malevolent spirit that kidnaps kids, cursed candy, and monsters at a family haunt.

Caught Stealing

Caught Stealing is available to rent. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the crime thriller runs about 1 hour and 47 minutes and stars Austin Butler, Regina King and Zoë Kravitz. The story follows Hank (Austin Butler), an alcoholic ex-baseball player who finds $4 million tied to the mafia and must survive as the violence escalates.

Primitive War

Primitive War can be rented as well. This sci-fi action film from Luke Sparke runs about 2 hours and 15 minutes. An elite recon unit sent into the Vietnam jungle in 1968 discovers dinosaurs and Soviet experiments, and they must survive prehistoric predators and hostile forces.

Rabbit Trap

Rabbit Trap (1 hour and 37 minutes) is a psychological horror that follows musicians Daphne and Darcy—played by Rosy McEwen and Dev Patel—who move to the Welsh countryside. Their ambient recordings pick up strange noises, and a mysterious child may connect them to local fairy tales.

Scurry

Scurry is a one-shot apocalyptic horror film available to rent. Running about 1 hour and 40 minutes, it follows two survivors stuck in an underground tunnel after an attack, forced to flee collapsing passages and mutated creatures.

Shell

Shell (1 hour and 40 minutes) stars Elisabeth Moss as a fading TV star who tries a wellness treatment from a mogul played by Kate Hudson. As other patients vanish and side effects appear, Moss’s character suspects something dangerous behind the clinic’s promises.

Tin Soldier

Tin Soldier is up for rent as well. This action thriller directed by Brad Furman runs about 1 hour and 26 minutes and stars Scott Eastwood, John Leguizamo and Nora Arnezeder. The plot follows a former soldier who escaped a cult and later gets a mission to rescue his wife, with Robert De Niro appearing as a government agent.

Toxic Avenger

Toxic Avenger is now available to rent for the first time. Directed by Macon Blair, the superhero comedy runs about 1 hour and 43 minutes. Peter Dinklage leads the cast alongside Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige in a remake of the 1984 Troma film, where a janitor becomes a mutated hero fighting a corrupt pharmaceutical executive played by Kevin Bacon.
