Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined: Toy-Style Remake Lets You Skip Encounters, Use Auto‑Battle & Play as Monster Master

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, Square Enix’s remake of the 25-year-old PS1 title Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, will arrive in 2026 with a set of visual and gameplay changes, the company said in an update on Thursday. The remake keeps the core story but makes combat and class systems more flexible while giving the game a new, toy-like look.

What Square Enix changed

Square Enix describes this version as a remake titled Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. The update lists several concrete updates: combat options have been adjusted, the vocation system has been expanded, and the story has been streamlined. In addition, characters are presented with a distinct visual style.

Battle changes

First, players can now encounter weaker monsters directly in the overworld instead of always entering a separate turn-based battle screen. This change reduces some of the previously mandatory battles.

Additionally, combat has new speed options: you can use preset commands to speed up fights, and there is an auto-battle mode where the game’s AI controls party actions.

Vocations and Monster Master

The remake retains the vocation (job) system. Each vocation grants specific abilities, stats, and spells. Moreover, characters can “moonlight”, meaning they may take on a second vocation.

Each vocation also includes a unique perk that a character can “let loose” once they are “worked up”, according to Square Enix. The remake introduces a new vocation called Monster Master, which allows characters to summon monsters in battle.

Visuals and story

Visually, Square Enix is using a “hand-crafted aesthetic” that renders heroes and villains in a miniature, toylike form. This look applies across environments and character models.

Meanwhile, the narrative has been described as streamlined compared to the original PS1 release, while keeping the game’s core plot intact.

Release date and platforms

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is scheduled for release on February 5, 2026. The game will be available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
