EA Announces Final Shutdown Date for Anthem Servers – Here’s What You Need to Know

Well, it’s official: EA is shutting down Anthem’s servers—yes, those servers were actually still up! If you ever wanted to jump back into your Javelin and take a flight over the alien landscapes, you’ve got a little time left. Electronic Arts just announced that Anthem will go offline for good in early 2026.
- EA is closing Anthem’s servers on January 12, 2026
- You can’t buy premium currency anymore, but you can use what’s left
- Anthem is already gone from digital stores and soon from EA Play
- BioWare stopped development on Anthem years ago
Anthem’s Final Countdown
In an official statement, EA said: “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline. We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that.”
What does it mean for players?
If you’ve got Anthem in your digital library, you’ll still be able to download and play it right up until January 12, 2026. However, if you were thinking about buying it, it’s already been pulled from digital stores. The game will also be leaving the EA Play library on August 15. While you can’t buy any more premium currency, whatever you have left is fair game until the servers close.
A Surprising Goodbye
Honestly, it’s a bit of a surprise these servers lasted this long. Remember, EA and BioWare had already put Anthem on the back burner years ago. In 2020, there was talk of a big redesign—Anthem NEXT—but that got cancelled in 2021. As BioWare’s Christian Dailey put it:
“In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT).”
What was Anthem anyway?
Anthem is an online multiplayer action-RPG from BioWare, released in January 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. The game let players pilot customizable exosuits called Javelins, flying around and completing missions on a mysterious alien world. While it had a lot of hype at launch, the reception was pretty lukewarm, and updates slowed down fast.
If you’ve still got fond memories—or unfinished business—in Anthem, now’s your last chance to suit up. The end is finally in sight!
