Burning Springs overview

Burning Springs is scheduled for December and is described by Bethesda as the largest content drop the MMO has received so far. In addition to adding new weapons and quests, the update expands the playable map so players can cross into Ohio. Developers Jonathan Rush (creative director) and Bill LaCoste (production director) discussed the update in an interview and explained how the team approached the expansion.

Map and design

The new Ohio region is notably a desert-style area. The team intentionally moved away from adding direct recreations of locations from other Fallout games. Instead, they focused on bringing the tone and feel of those games into a new area that still fits Fallout 76’s Appalachian setting.

“We’ve just always believed in this game,” Jonathan Rush said, describing the studio’s long-term commitment to updating Fallout 76. Furthermore, Rush explained the design brief for the new region: “It’s got to have desert, Deathclaws, and a lot of raiders. To me, that’s what Fallout 3, that’s what New Vegas is. Those are the main elements that carry the tone of those games, and so I wanted that mirrored here. Sure enough, Burning Springs is desert, Deathclaws, and raiders. In a much different way, but still there.”

Bill LaCoste added context about Ohio’s place in Fallout lore: “There’s only four or five references to Ohio in all of Fallout,” which left room for the team to build a distinct region without contradicting prior entries.

References and inspiration

The team did not work directly with Obsidian on New Vegas inspiration. Instead, they studied the older games to capture a similar tone rather than copy specific assets or locations. That approach was intended to keep the MMO’s world coherent while still honoring the series’ wider history.

Some fan discussions have speculated about studio relationships and influences; the developers addressed that by saying the studio team simply appreciates the entire Fallout series. In the community, some topics and theories can be seen in forums such as this discussion.

TV tie-in and Walton Goggins

The Amazon Fallout TV show influenced the timing and content of Burning Springs. The game saw a boost in players after the show’s first season; Jonathan Rush said it increased player numbers by “six or seven” times. Accordingly, the team planned a tie-in that connects to the show’s Season 2 teaser while fitting naturally into the game world.

Rush described how a gameplay feature lined up with the show’s character: “We were figuring out what this new region is, what the tone of it was, and then what the kind of hallmark feature of the new region would be, that’s bounty hunting,” he said. “So who better to host bounty hunting than Walton Goggins as The Ghoul? Him being a huge fan of the games too, he was very eager to work with us and get this done as well. So it wasn’t planned from the onset, but it came about through organically developing the feature.”

Development outlook and future updates

Burning Springs is not the end for Fallout 76 updates. The team is planning updates well into 2026 and is mapping out content up to what they call the 72nd update. They also noted plans that could lead to a 76th update in the future.

On the series’ long-term progress, Bill LaCoste said: “There was a time where we didn’t think there would ever be an update 76,” highlighting how the project’s trajectory changed since launch.
