Fallout: Bakersfield — A Retro Doom Mod So Good Fans Are Begging for a Full Fallout RPG

Fallout: Bakersfield is a fan-made total conversion mod for 1993’s Doom that recreates the look, UI and combat feel of the original Fallout CRPGs while running in a first-person Doom engine. The project has shared extended footage and an earlier trailer, and the creator has posted progress updates about gameplay systems and assets.
Overview of Bakersfield
Fallout: Bakersfield is a total conversion mod that maps Fallout-style systems onto Doom’s engine. It aims to reproduce the *chunky, pixelated* look of the original Fallout games while running as a first-person experience, and it has been in development for a couple of years.
Modder Saur X released an extended gameplay trailer showing combat, UI elements, enemy reactions and environmental details. That footage is the main public demonstration of Bakersfield’s current mechanics.
Visuals and sound
The mod uses pixel-art, low-resolution visuals that echo Fallout’s early isometric art. As a result, terrain and props show visible rust, grit and blocky detail rather than modern photorealism.
There’s also atmospheric audio and weather in the background, plus distinctive reload animations shown in the footage. Additionally, the trailer includes visible gore effects when enemies are damaged.
UI and combat systems
Bakersfield reproduces an old-school Fallout-style interface that resembles a simplified Pip-Boy. The UI reports combat numbers such as damage and shows what the player can see.
Although there isn’t an obvious VATs menu in the trailer, the mod appears to use player stats to affect hit chances and damage calculations. The footage demonstrates enemies dropping weapons, reacting to hits, and using varied attack animations.
Weapons and gadgets
The trailer shows a range of weapons, including energy pistols and power fists, and it also highlights a motion detector that reports enemy locations. Many reload and attack animations are present, and combat is the primary focus of the available footage.
Development status and creator
Saur X is the mod’s creator and has posted trailers and updates. The creator accepts donations via Boosty, though donations are not required to continue development.
As of the last update, the project was reported to be around 60% finished, with scenery and environment elements being the most developed. The mod has implemented roughly 30% of the planned creatures, which explains the trailer’s emphasis on ghouls and a smaller roster of enemy types so far.

The trailer and footage have received praise in comments and social feeds. Two direct comments that appeared in the source material are quoted below.
“Never seen a fan project get so close to the OG vibe,”
“The attention to detail in this mod is insane,”
Commenters specifically noted the level of grit on terrain and props and the way some enemy behaviors and atmospheric touches match the aesthetic of the original Fallout CRPGs.
