Final Fantasy Tactics Remake Director Still Plays NES Classic Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers — Says the Music Hooked Him

Kazutoyo Maehiro, director of the Final Fantasy Tactics remake, says the NES game he still plays is the 1990 Capcom platformer based on the Disney cartoon Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers. He mentioned the game while talking about The Ivalice Chronicles, which is due out Sept. 30.
Which NES game
Maehiro named Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers as a title he still enjoys playing. He brought it up during an interview about his work and classic games.
Why he likes it
Maehiro talked about the music and the game’s playability. He said, “First and foremost, the music is really great. It’s so light and fine, so playing through it, you always feel this sense of excitement that comes out from that.”
He added, “Another strength of the game is just how easily playable it is. And then of course there’s also two playable characters, Chip and Dale. The way that it’s been created feels very complete,” he explains. “And so when I was a kid, actually, me and my younger brother would sometimes play together, and he would be Chip and I would be Dale. Even now as an adult, I might play the game myself or play with my wife.”
About Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers
The game was released by Capcom in 1990 for the NES and is based on the Disney animated series of the same name. It features single-player and co-op modes, and players can pick up and throw objects like crates, acorns, and balls.
Stages include a backyard, a casino, and a factory, among others, and the enemy roster draws from the TV show. The soundtrack was composed by Harumi Fujita, who also worked on Mega Man 3.
Some outlets call Rescue Rangers an underrated NES gem and the game sold about 1.2 million copies worldwide. For a retrospective review, see this review, and for basic release and sales data see the game’s Wikipedia entry.
Where to find it
The original NES cartridge remains the primary retail version from 1990, and the title has not been officially added to every modern retro service. Maehiro mentioned playing it at home with family, but he did not announce any new re-releases during the interview.
