HBO’s Harry Potter Series Begins Production with First Look at Dominic McLaughlin

Production has officially kicked off on the highly anticipated HBO Original Harry Potter series at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. Fans got their first glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin stepping into the shoes of the Boy Who Lived himself, Harry Potter.

  • Production start and first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
  • New cast additions including Neville Longbottom and Garrick Ollivander
  • Returning cast members revealed earlier
  • Series planned as a decade-long adaptation of all seven books
  • Premiere set for 2027 on HBO and HBO Max

New Faces Joining the Wizarding World

Alongside McLaughlin, the show welcomes several new cast members: Rory Wilmot takes on the role of Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson plays Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey (known from Sherlock) portrays Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser (familiar from Andor and Game of Thrones) will bring to life the legendary wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.

Previously announced stars include Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.

A Decade-Long Journey Through J.K. Rowling’s Books

Announced back in 2023, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot aims to be a “decade-long series” adapting all seven of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels. The network promises the show will be crafted with the same epic care and love that fans expect from this global franchise. Rowling herself expressed excitement about the format, saying that a long-form series “will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by television.”

Creative Team and Release Plans

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner (known for Succession and His Dark Materials), with Emmy-winning director Mark Mylod set to executive produce and direct multiple episodes. This production is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television.

Executive producers also include J.K. Rowling herself, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts for Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman, the producer behind the Harry Potter film series and Paddington, for Heyday Films.

The show is scheduled to premiere in 2027 on HBO and the newly renamed HBO Max streaming platform, which will also be launching in new international markets such as Germany, Italy, and the U.K.
