What is Nightholme
Nightholme is described as a horror extraction game set in a corrupted fantasy world overrun by a threat called the Gloom. It’s a large-scale player-versus-player-versus-environment (PvPvE) title where rival teams of three compete to take down powerful Nightwalker bosses and each other, then extract with loot.
Gameplay
In each run, players become Grimrunners who can drink potions to evolve into monstrous forms. These transformations are dynamic and can be adjusted during a run, so builds can change on the fly. Teams that successfully complete objectives and escape get permanent rewards called Terror Seeds, which add new abilities.
Matches mix PvE boss fights with PvP tension: while you hunt Nightwalkers for loot, other squads can ambush you. As a result, runs can swing quickly — one moment you’re coordinating a boss takedown, and the next you’re defending an extraction point.
Development and team
Studio Ellipsis is based in Lisbon, Portugal. The studio was founded by Alexandre Amancio, known for directing Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The team includes industry veterans who previously worked at Avalanche and Bungie, as well as staff from several Ubisoft studios, including Massive Entertainment.
Amancio commented on the studio and game, saying: “After opening our studio doors last year, we’re thrilled to share our first game, Nightholme. Our team of both newcomers and industry veterans set out to create a one-of-a-kind multiplayer horror experience that’s as terrifying as it is unpredictable, where every match feels like its own unique story of survival,” Amancio said in a statement. “The last thing anyone needs is another generic multiplayer game, so with Nightholme we’ve made sure that we’re offering a fresh and exciting experience to fans of horror and extraction games.”
Trailer and early footage
Studio Ellipsis released a trailer showing moody cinematics alongside pre-alpha gameplay. The footage highlights the game’s exaggerated horror-fantasy art style and the core loop of hunting bosses, evolving mid-run, and fighting other teams for extraction.
