Galaxy Quest Streams on Paramount Plus — Early Script Included Decapitations and an F‑Bomb

Galaxy Quest, the 1999 sci‑fi comedy that parodies TV space dramas, is streaming on Paramount Plus after landing on the platform earlier this month. The film was released on Dec. 25, 1999, and follows a washed‑up TV cast who are mistaken for real space heroes by an alien race that has watched their show.

Quick summary

Galaxy Quest centers on the fictional TV series Galaxy Quest, which was popular in the 1980s within the film’s world. A decade after the show ends, the original cast members are doing convention appearances and promotional work.

Meanwhile, an alien species has been watching the TV episodes and believes the show is a documentary. When those aliens are threatened, they summon the show’s cast to help, expecting real starship officers. The actors must respond to the crisis despite their lack of real military or space experience.

Cast and characters

The film’s main cast includes Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, and Sam Rockwell. The actors portray former co‑stars who have grown apart professionally but still share a history from their time on the TV show.

Reported deleted R‑rated material

According to an oral history compiled by MTV (via Big Shiny Robot), early drafts and some filmed scenes for Galaxy Quest contained darker or R‑rated material that did not make the final cut.

Screenwriter Robert Gordon is quoted directly: “There’s talk about the so‑called R‑rated version of the film,” he said. “When I originally wrote it, I wasn’t thinking about a family film, just what I wanted to see. So when the ship lands in the convention hall in the original draft, it decapitates a bunch of people. There was also stuff we shot where Sigourney tries to seduce some of the aliens. It was cut – and that’s why her shirt is ripped at the end. Also, the worst-dubbed ‘F-bomb’ ever.”

Where to watch

Galaxy Quest is currently available for streaming on Paramount Plus. The film was added to the service earlier this month; subscribers can locate it through the platform’s movie catalog.

Notable line

The movie contains memorable in‑film lines that fans still quote, including: “By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged.”
