Demo and event
Thunderful is publishing Godbreakers, which is developed by To The Sky. The demo is part of Steam Next Fest, so you can download and play it through the Steam storefront. For details and the demo itself, see the Godbreakers Steam page.
How runs play out
Each run in Godbreakers sends you across a series of planets. You clear rooms of enemies, tackle minibosses, and face larger bosses at the end of biomes. Along the way, you pick up perks, equipment, and essences that shape your character for that run.
Biomes and art
The game features several distinct biomes with colorful, soft visuals. Biomes include desert and fiery zones, among others, and they each offer different enemy types and environmental variety.
Combat and the Godbreak mechanic
Godbreakers focuses on fast, heavy melee action. You build an energy meter by attacking enemies. Once the meter is full, you can perform a Godbreak on a weakened enemy to absorb its power. That absorbed power grants a single-use special attack, which varies by enemy type.
Examples of Godbreak effects
For instance, in a desert area you might gain a burrow-and-surge attack after Godbreaking a sand creature. In a volcanic zone you could absorb a small pest and unlock a powerful energy beam. Thus, the mechanic encourages absorbing enemies to collect different one-use abilities.
Progression and builds
Progression happens both within runs and across runs. During a run you can unlock:
- Archetypes that change starting weapons and playstyle (examples include the balanced Lancer and the heavy-hitting Pillar).
- Equipment slots for weapons and armor, plus essences that boost stats and elemental effects like poison or burning.
- Armor traits that provide situational bonuses, such as random buffs on certain kills or armor stacks when damaged below a threshold.
- Cosmetic items tied to quests, which unlock as you complete objectives.
Overall, the game emphasizes buildcrafting inside each run, and many upgrades are earned through in-run challenges and quests.
Release date and platforms
The full version of Godbreakers launches on Oct. 23. It will be available for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. The demo is available now for the duration of Steam Next Fest.
If you want to try it, grab the demo from the Godbreakers Steam page during the festival.
