What the first issue covers

The opening issue follows an older Han Solo who is trying to get the Millennium Falcon back after it comes into the ownership of gunrunner Gannis Ducain. In the opening sequence Han and Lando attend a podrace; when the pilot he backed performs poorly, Han jumps in to finish the race himself.

Later scenes move the action to Kashyyyk, where Chewbacca appears with his family. Chewie agrees to join Han on the hunt for the Falcon, but initially asks if his Wookiee family can come along. Han declines that request in the issue.

Key plot points in issue 1

– The Falcon is held by Gannis Ducain, and Han sets out to recover it.
– Han revisits past relationships visually, with panels showing holo pictures of Leia and Ben Solo.
– Chewbacca’s family and Kashyyyk scenes establish what Chewie has been doing since the original trilogy.
– The issue sets a narrative tone that ties into later timeline events; by the time of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Falcon is known to be in Unkar Plutt’s scrapyard on Jakku.

Notable themes and comparisons

Issue 1 includes material that emphasizes loss and reflection, shown through Han’s interactions and the use of old holos. Separately, some readers and commentators have drawn comparisons between this portrayal of an older, world-weary hero and the Marvel Comics story Old Man Logan, which was created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. The film Logan (2017) also adapted elements of that comic.
