Trailer and release
HBO debuted the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at New York Comic Con. The clip focuses on Dunk trying to make a name for himself as a knight, and it teases that Egg is not quite what he seems. The miniseries is set to premiere on January 18, 2026, and the first season will run for six episodes.
Cast and characters
Peter Claffey plays Ser Duncan the Tall, usually called Dunk. Dexter Sol Ansell plays his squire, known as Egg. The trailer centers on their relationship as knight and squire, while hinting at Egg’s larger significance to the wider world of Westeros.
Setting and adaptation
The story takes place between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. In this era, dragons are extinct in Westeros, and although the Targaryens still rule the Seven Kingdoms, their power has been diminished without dragons. The first season adapts the novella The Hedge Knight, which is the opening story of the Dunk and Egg collection A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Production notes and quotes
Showrunner Ira Parker said the team wanted the series’ presentation to match its protagonist’s personality. Specifically, Parker said Dunk is “plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point,” and that decision influenced aspects such as the title sequence. According to George R.R. Martin, the first season is “as faithful [an] adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject).” Martin also said he intends to write another Dunk and Egg novella, but not until after he finishes The Winds of Winter.
