Historic Win: Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Tops $633.5M, Beats Superman to Become First Japanese Film Over $600M

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has officially become the first Japanese film to pass the **$600 million** mark at the global box office, and in doing so it has overtaken this summer’s Superman in worldwide grosses.
Box office figures
According to Box Office Mojo, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has grossed $633,497,757 worldwide as of this week. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Superman is at $615,784,465, per Box Office Mojo. Thus, Demon Slayer now leads by roughly $17.7 million in global ticket sales.
Records and rankings
As a result, Infinity Castle is the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. Previously, that top spot belonged to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which earned **over $500 million** worldwide in 2020. In the current overall rankings, Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name sits at number three, while Suzume is at number five. Hayao Miyazaki appears twice as well, with Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron occupying spots four and six respectively.
Critical context
Some critics have previously argued that Mugen Train’s huge haul was helped by the relative lack of new releases during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, Infinity Castle’s strong international performance suggests the franchise has genuine staying power rather than being a pandemic-era fluke. For more background on that earlier argument, see this LA Times story.
What comes next
Looking ahead, attention now turns to other anime releases. Sony and Crunchyroll’s Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 24. Meanwhile, announcements for the next two films in the Infinity Castle trilogy have been unclear; previously reported release years of 2027 and 2029 were later debunked, so official dates are currently not available.
