Relic weapons, explained
Relic weapons are job-specific weapons that you upgrade through multi-step questlines. Each step usually raises the item level and adds visual changes or special effects. For Dawntrail, the Phantom series is the current relic chain introduced in patch 7.25.
At present, the initial Phantom weapon is item level 745, and the first upgrade to Phantom Umbrae raises it to item level 760. Additional steps are expected in future patches.
Step 1: How to get your Phantom Penumbrae weapon
The first Phantom weapon step (Penumbrae) is available after patch 7.25. It requires completing parts of the Dawntrail content and collecting specific drops called demiatma, plus buying some tomestone materials.
To start the quest chain:
- Finish the Dawntrail main scenario quest.
- Unlock the Occult Crescent hub by completing the questline beginning with “One Last Hurrah” in Tuliyollal.
- Progress the Occult Crescent quests until you complete “Unfamiliar Territory.”
- Speak to Lydirceil in the Phantom Village to start “Arcane Artistry.”
Next, obtain the required drop and tomestones:
- Collect three of each of the six demiatma types (18 total). These drop from critical encounters (CEs) and FATEs in the Occult Crescent and in Dawntrail zones.
- Turn the 18 demiatma in to Gerolt, then accept “Forging the Phantasmal” for the job you want the weapon for.
- Buy three Arcanite from Ermina in the Phantom Village for 500 Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry each (1,500 total).
- Turn the Arcanite in to Dodokkuli to finish the step.
Drop rates for demiatma are low: expect to do many critical encounters and FATEs. In practice, roughly 20 CEs might yield only a few demiatma. For subsequent weapons on other jobs, you only need to buy three more Arcanite each time and trade them to Dodokkuli — no more demiatma farming is required for additional jobs.
The Phantom weapons have distinct designs per job. For a visual look at the full set, check this showcase:
Where each demiatma drops
Based on experience and crowdsourced reports, each demiatma color most commonly drops in a specific Occult Crescent area and corresponding Dawntrail zone. Note that some players report cross-area drops, though that was not observed in all testing.

Step 2: Upgrade to a Phantom Umbrae weapon
Patch 7.31 added the Phantom Umbrae upgrade. This step augments the Penumbrae weapon so it glows, gains higher stats, and becomes item level 760. The step requires several purchased and crafted components, plus aether collection via duty roulettes.
Requirements overview:
- Complete the Penumbrae steps described above.
- Speak to Lydirceil in Phantom Village and accept “Keeping the Old Ways Alive.”
- Turn in the following five items to Gerolt (all can be bought on the marketboard if preferred):
- Rroneek glue — sold by Goplu in Tuliyollal (13.1, 12.7) for 300,000 gil.
- Ut’ohmu siderite — sold by Rral Wuruq in Yak T’el (13.8, 12.7) for 600 bicolor gemstones.
- Synthetic dark matter alpha — crafted by blacksmiths, armorers, or goldsmiths using 8 octahedrite, 4 raw rhodochrosite, and 2 levinchrome aethersand.
- Synthetic dark matter beta — crafted by carpenters, leatherworkers, or weavers using 4 cordia logs, 4 cochineal pigment, 4 Shaaloani coffee, and 2 levinchrome aethersand.
- Synthetic dark matter gamma — crafted by alchemists or culinarians using 4 filgurite, 4 Shaaloani coffee, and 2 levinchrome aethersand.
After turning those in, start “Aether, Aether, Everywhere.” Then you must fill the four aetherwells in the Aetherwell Array by running duty roulettes. Each well corresponds to a roulette type: high-level dungeons, trials, alliance raids, and normal raids.
Each aetherwell needs 10,000 aether. Running daily roulettes awards a bonus the first time you run each roulette per day, so daily completion accelerates the process. With bonuses, expect roughly 450–850 aether per roulette; without them, gains are lower, especially from trials and normal raids. In practice, plan for about two weeks of daily roulettes to finish this step.
Once the Aetherwell Array is filled and the related quest completes, your Penumbrae weapon becomes Phantom Umbrae with the visual glow and higher stats.
Notes and next steps
More relic steps and requirements are likely to appear in later patches. For now, the path to the first two Phantom stages is concrete: quest progression, demiatma farming (or marketboard buys), tomestones for Arcanite, then the Umbrae materials plus aether roulettes.
