James Gunn Erases Zack Snyder’s Justice League Cameo in Peacemaker Season 2 Premiere

Peacemaker season 2 opens by explicitly retconning a Justice League cameo from season 1, replacing the Zack Snyder-era appearance with members of the new DCU’s Justice Gang. The change is presented inside a “previously on” recap, and James Gunn explained the reason on the show’s official podcast.
- Which scene was changed and why.
- Who appeared in the original cameo versus the retcon.
- Where James Gunn explained the decision.
- How the new callback plays out in episode 1 of season 2.
What happened in the original season 1 cameo
At the end of Peacemaker season 1, the Justice League arrived after a battle, seen mostly in silhouette. That sequence was staged during the Zack Snyder era of the DC Extended Universe. Superman and Wonder Woman are silent and not shown on camera; Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot were not in that scene. However, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller appeared as Aquaman and Flash.
How season 2 rewrites that moment
Season 2 opens with a recap that removes the Snyder-era Justice League from continuity. Instead, the show presents the Justice Gang from the new DCU as seen in Superman: Superman, Supergirl, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl. Only two actors from that group appear on screen: Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. James Gunn directed the season premiere himself.
On Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn explained the decision and said:
“Now we come into the new DCU — and really, you look back at season 1 of Peacemaker and almost everything [in it is still] canon. We’re doing little tiny things — maybe there’s no Bat-Mite, maybe there’s no Green Arrow, I don’t know. They’re pretty small things. But the appearance of the Justice League is totally wrong and doesn’t fit. And so we have a plan for it.”
How the new gag works in the episode
Previously, Peacemaker had spread a crude rumor about Aquaman, and the season 1 finale included a callback where Peacemaker shouted, Go fuck another fish, asshole!
Aquaman responded that he is so fucking sick of that rumor
and Flash snickered, prompting Aquaman to say, Fuck you, Barry.
Because the Snyder-era cameo no longer fits the new continuity, season 2 instead inserts a different flashback. In that new bit, Peacemaker admits he once threw up on Guy while Guy was flying him. The show then establishes that Peacemaker has been telling people Guy is a puke freak
, which becomes the new target of the callback between characters.
What remains and what changes
According to the show and Gunn’s explanation, most of season 1’s events remain canon in the new DCU, but specific character appearances can be rewritten for continuity reasons. In short, Peacemaker remains canonical in the new DCU, while the Snyder-era Justice League cameo has been removed from continuity.
