James Gunn Says Peacemaker Won’t Return as a TV Season — Characters Are Heading to DCU Films

James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO and showrunner of Peacemaker, said a third season “as this TV show” is not confirmed and that the characters will appear in the DCU in other formats. He made the remarks on the official Peacemaker podcast and in interviews with Deadline and Rolling Stone.

What James Gunn said
On the official Peacemaker podcast, Gunn stated: “Peacemaker will be back. As this TV show? We’ll see exactly what form. We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long.” He also told Deadline that he has his “next few” movies lined up.
What this means for Peacemaker
Concretely, Gunn indicated that Peacemaker’s story will continue within the evolving DCU, but not necessarily as a straight follow-up TV season. Therefore, elements introduced in the show could be addressed in feature films or other series tied to the DCU.
Deadline reported Gunn’s comment that he has multiple film projects planned; accordingly, the character and supporting cast could appear in those projects rather than in a standalone season three.
Season 2 cliffhanger
The second season ends with Christopher Smith (Peacemaker) taken to Salvation, a parallel Earth that the show presents as being converted into a prison for metahumans. At the same time, the rest of his team is unaware of his abduction.
In a Rolling Stone interview, Gunn said: “People should expect that the way that the military and Rick Flagg and everybody are working together and they’ve created a probably illegal prison for metahumans on another dimension is gonna be a part of DCU stories going forward. And not just a tertiary, Oh, this is Arkham — it’s a part of the stories. There’s an escalating war, obviously, that’s going on between the government and metahumans. And this is a part of it.” The same Rolling Stone piece notes Gunn’s broader plans for the DCU.

Format options and storytelling
Factually, television series provide more episodic runtime across multiple episodes, while feature films usually run for a limited number of hours. Consequently, character beats that appear across many TV episodes must be condensed if adapted to a single film.
Gunn has said that Peacemaker will show up in the DCU, but he has not announced a confirmed film titled as a direct Season 3 continuation. For example, he named Man of Tomorrow as an upcoming Superman sequel and said Peacemaker’s fate will not be resolved in that film.
Supporting cast and Checkmate comments
The Season 2 finale includes several characters who could move into other DCU projects: Tim Meadows’ character, Sasha Bordeaux as Sol Rodriguez, Nhut Le as Judomaster, plus recurring members of the 11th Street team.
Peacemaker actor Steve Agee said: “I would imagine [any future for the Peacemaker characters without Peacemaker] would be Checkmate,” and Gunn has not ruled out future series set in that world. In Rolling Stone, Gunn also said: “We’ll find out as time goes on.”
In summary, the confirmed facts are: Gunn announced on the official Peacemaker podcast that a third season “as this TV show” is not confirmed; he said the characters will appear in the DCU; he has multiple films planned; and he described Salvation and the metahuman prison as elements that will figure into future DCU stories.
