James Gunn Teases Peacemaker’s Return to the DCU — Season 3 Isn’t Guaranteed

Will there be a Peacemaker season 3?

Short answer: maybe. James Gunn has signalled strong support for the show and its characters, but he also framed the season 2 ending as part of a larger plan for the DC Universe. Therefore, while the characters are returning in DC projects, a formal Peacemaker season 3 has not been greenlit as a definite, separate series.

What James Gunn said

Gunn opened the latest podcast episode by saying, This is the final episode of Peacemaker season two; maybe the final episode of Peacemaker. Later, he clarified the intent more fully: We are true believers in Peacemaker the television show and these characters, and added, Peacemaker will be back. As this TV show? We’ll see exactly what form. We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long.

Additionally, when asked by Deadline, Gunn framed the finale as serving the wider DCU: No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.

How the finale sets up the DCU

Gunn has shared concrete details about how season 2 ties into upcoming DC projects. First, the cliffhanger is meant to lead into the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, so the television ending is deliberately connected to the theatrical plan. Second, Gunn revealed that his early draft closed with what he called the happiest montage I’ve ever shot in my entire life — a sequence where the 11th Street Kids use confiscated money to form a spy agency called Checkmate.

However, Gunn then reworked the ending to connect the show to ARGUS’s plan for a metahuman prison called Salvation. The final cut leaves Chris Smith (John Cena) stranded on Salvation and introduces unseen beasts that make what Gunn described as hellish squeals, which further suggests they might be parademons. Gunn also added a beat where Eagly comforts John Economos (Steve Agee) to reassure viewers about the bird’s fate.

Cast and creative future

John Cena has expressed that he loves making the show and hopes the team can reunite in some form. Meanwhile, Gunn — now co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran — said his aim is to make Peacemaker a top-tier property within the DCU. As Gunn put it: He’s really important to me. Peacemaker is an important character. I said from the beginning when we took on this job, it’s about really propping up and maintaining and repositioning. The big diamond properties that DC has, the Batmans and Wonder Womans and Supermans, and then creating diamond properties out of the smaller characters like Peacemaker.

So, in summary: the characters will appear again in the DCU, and the world built in Peacemaker season 2 is part of that plan. Yet, whether the story returns as Peacemaker season 3 specifically remains undecided for now.
