Kingdom Come Reborn as Epic Audiobook — 30‑Actor Cast, Orchestral Score and Superman Returns Nov. 18

The classic 1996 DC Comics limited series Kingdom Come is being adapted into a fully cast audiobook, and it will arrive on Nov. 18. Penguin Random House Audio and DC Comics announced the production, which features a 30-plus person cast, cinematic sound design, and an orchestral score by James Hannigan.
What the release is
This is a fully cast audiobook adaptation of Kingdom Come, the apocalyptic limited series written by Mark Waid with art by Alex Ross. It will be published by Penguin Random House Audio in collaboration with DC Comics, and the adaptation is by BBC Radio veteran Dirk Maggs.
Cast and production team
The cast tops 30 actors. Notably, Marc Thompson—who voiced Superman in DC’s fully-cast audiobook of All-Star Superman—returns to the role here. Edoardo Ballerini plays the preacher and narrator Norman McCay, while Lorelei King voices Wonder Woman. Tom Alexander is cast as the violent new “hero” Magog.
Dirk Maggs adapted and directed the production, and James Hannigan composed a stirring orchestral score. The project includes cinematic sound design and extensive sound effects to complement the cast work.
“I’ve been adapting and directing multicast, award-winning audiobooks of iconic DC Comics Superman and Batman stories for more than three decades, but among them all, Kingdom Come was always the one that got away,” Maggs said in a statement. “At last, thanks to Penguin Random House Audio, I can tell Mark Waid’s epic story, with Alex Ross’s beautiful artwork brought alive through cinematic sound design combined with James Hannigan’s stirring orchestral score.”
Story context
Kingdom Come is set in a darker future where many of DC’s classic heroes have stepped back and a younger, more brutal generation has taken their place. After Magog causes a nuclear disaster in Kansas, Superman returns from retirement to reform the Justice League and try to restore hope.
Release details
Penguin Random House Audio and DC Comics announced the audiobook on Thursday, and the release date is Nov. 18. This marks a follow-up collaboration after the teams worked together on the All-Star Superman audiobook adaptation.
