Kirby Air Riders on Switch 2 Keeps the GameCube’s Weird One-Button Charm — But Supercharges the Spectacle

Nintendo’s Kirby Air Riders is a Switch 2 exclusive sequel to the 2003 GameCube title Kirby Air Ride. After a dedicated Nintendo Direct, a writer attended a hands-on preview event in New York City, where they played two traditional races and three rounds of City Trial.

Preview details
At the New York City preview, the demo included two traditional Air Ride races and three City Trial rounds. The session followed a dedicated Nintendo Direct and provided time to try tutorials, practice moves, and play the final minigames that conclude City Trial matches.
Controls and core mechanics
The game keeps the original’s simplified input scheme while adding one notable button. Specifically, players do not hold a button to accelerate; instead, they steer left and right, press B to charge boosts, and move the left control stick to perform spin attacks on track enemies. In addition, players can drift by holding the boost button and glide off jumps by tilting the left stick. The sequel adds a special attack mapped to the Y button, which increases on-screen spectacle during use.
Race structure
Traditional Air Ride races in the demo were standard three-lap events. The pacing felt faster than the 2003 game, and courses emphasized visual spectacle and speed. For example, one watery course begins with a narrow zigzag through a parted sea and ramps into high-speed sections that emphasize boost and glide management.
City Trial mode
City Trial remains a central mode. In the demo, 12 players are dropped onto a compact map and given five minutes to collect stat-boosting items, switch machines, and trigger map events. After five minutes, players vote on one of four final minigames; the player best equipped for that minigame has the strongest chance to win.
During the preview, City Trial rounds produced different mid-match events such as a pop-up arena battle, a short drag race, and a clearing filled with boxes to smash open. Players can find machines that change handling, speed, glide, and other stats while scavenging the map. One route found during the preview ran under a pirate ship, onto a spring that launched to the deck, and into a cannon that shot players high into the sky.
How it compares to the original
The sequel intentionally preserves much of the original structure. Many vehicles and minigames are direct recreations of their 2003 counterparts. However, the Switch 2 build enhances visuals and adds special attacks and a second button, while retaining the original’s movement quirks and one-button acceleration design. The game is described by Nintendo as a “vehicle action game”.
Release and context
Kirby Air Riders is confirmed as a Switch 2 exclusive with a release date of November 20. The original GameCube game launched in 2003 and received mixed critical reception at the time, with some reviewers citing a lack of depth and the one-button control scheme. The sequel launches into a different player environment, with existing fans and content creators already familiar with the original.
Finally, the preview offered concrete gameplay impressions from race and City Trial sessions, while broader public reception will become clear after launch.
