Far Lands arrival

KurtJMac finally stepped into the Far Lands after a virtual trek that ran across more than 800 episodes of his Far Lands or Bust series. In fact, the final approach happened at sea: the Far Lands in his world spawned in the ocean, so his last few moments were a sail that turned into a wall of warped terrain.

What the Far Lands are

The Far Lands are not an official biome. Instead, they are a glitch that appears far from the map center, creating a high, straight wall pockmarked with deep, cave-like holes. They are estimated to occur at around 12,550,821 blocks from the world center in classic Beta-era Minecraft.

The walk and game version

KurtJMac completed the hike without cheats or teleportation, using Minecraft Beta 1.7.3, because the Far Lands were fixed in later versions. Therefore, players who want to see the Far Lands today generally use mods or older game builds.

Records and precedents

Although KurtJMac’s run is the most famous Far Lands series and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest journey in Minecraft, he was not the first person to reach the Far Lands without cheats. For example, KilloCrazyMan completed his hike in June 2020 after about nine months.

Charity impact and what’s next

Over the lifetime of the series, viewer donations helped raise more than $525,000 for charities such as Child’s Play, Direct Relief, and the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. Currently, the project aims to raise $50,000 for UNRWA USA, a UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees. For ongoing info and plans, Kurt’s site notes: “There are many more glitched landscapes and curiosities to explore around and beyond the Far Lands that should keep us busy for months… and perhaps years to come!” You can find details on the official Far Lands or Bust site.

More information about the series is available on the Far Lands or Bust website.

Watch the moment

If you want to see the exact moment KurtJMac entered the Far Lands, jump to three hours, 43 minutes, and 25 seconds into his final stream. The scene shows him sailing toward what first looks like a wall of mist, which then resolves into the Far Lands.
