What is Talk to Me

Talk to Me stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, a teenager in Adelaide who is still grieving her mother’s death. At a party, a classmate reveals a severed, embalmed human hand that can be used to communicate with the dead. The teens try the ritual, and Mia becomes obsessed with reconnecting with her mother. Crucially, the film sets a rule: do not use the hand for more than 90 seconds in a row. When that rule is broken, a demon is inadvertently invited into Mia’s life.

Why it lands as horror

The film combines practical and special effects with psychological themes. Early scenes use sudden edits and visual effects to reveal rotting, deformed corpses, which deliver effective jump scares. Moreover, the story centers on grief: Mia’s choices feel grounded, so the audience can empathize even as events go horribly wrong. As a result, many viewers and critics found the climax and final twist especially affecting and frightening.

Where to watch

As of this report, Talk to Me is streaming on Netflix, but it is set to leave Netflix at the end of September. After that, the film will be available on HBO Max in October. Therefore, if you want to watch it on Netflix, you should do so before the end of the month.

Who made it

The film was directed by twins Danny and Michael Philippou, who are also known for their VFX-focused YouTube work under the RackaRacka name. A24 handled distribution for the movie. Talk to Me became A24’s highest-grossing horror movie, surpassing Hereditary, which previously held that spot.

After Talk to Me

In May 2025, the Philippou brothers released Bring Her Back, which is loosely connected to Talk to Me. That film includes a secret Sophie Wilde cameo. Critics and viewers have described Bring Her Back as more disturbing in parts, but with less of the comedic beats and thrills that helped make Talk to Me widely popular.
