Anniversary timing and past anniversary releases
The Nintendo Direct took place on Sept. 12, just one day before the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. release in Japan on Sept. 13, 1985. Mario as a character first appeared earlier, in Donkey Kong (1981), and then in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros.
For context, Nintendo marked Mario’s 35th anniversary in 2020 with several limited-time and special releases. Those included the online title Super Mario Bros. 35, the compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a special Game & Watch handheld, and re-releases such as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
