Starting the Recluse Remembrance Quest
The quest kicks off in the Recluse’s journal at Chapter 2. There’s no fixed time when this chapter unlocks, but typically it appears after completing three or four expeditions as the Recluse. You don’t even have to defeat a Nightlord for it to count — failed attempts count too. Once Chapter 2 pops up, you’ll see the option to “begin Remembrance” under the journal entry. Starting this lets you relive one of Recluse’s memories, but don’t worry, you can switch classes or pause the quest anytime without penalty.
Keep in mind, Nightreign limits you to one personal objective per expedition, and if you’re teaming up with others who also have Remembrance quests, there’s no guarantee your objective will appear on the map.
Chapter 2: Vanquish Enemies Tainted by Night
Head to Roundtable Hold’s dining room and chat with the Iron Menial to start this chapter. Your task? Defeat a Night-tainted enemy and bring back proof. Don’t stress — it’s not a Nightlord boss. The target is a Night-Swallowed Golden Hippopotamus, a familiar foe at the end of expeditions. Look for a red quest icon on your map marking its location, which can vary with Shifting Earth effects.
Recommended level is 3+, and upgrading your Recluse’s Staff once can make a big difference. Stay agile and avoid long-cast spells since the hippo’s lunges are deadly. Simple sorceries like Glintstone Pebble and Magic Cocktail will get you through safely. After victory, bring the Night Shard to the Menial and exhaust his dialogue to earn the Recluse’s Chalice — a new relic with slots for yellow, green, and free relics.
Chapter 4: Vestige of Night
Keep completing expeditions as the Recluse until Chapter 4 unlocks. Starting this Remembrance, you’ll find a note from the Menial. After speaking with him again and requesting the Night Shard back, it mysteriously pulses with magic. Next, check Roundtable Hold’s bedroom — one bed has a shadowy stain. Examining it grants the Vestige of Night, a green relic that boosts magic power and creates Terra Magica zones. Standing in these zones powers up your spells, perfect for any mage build.
Chapter 6: The Witch of the Wheel
After more expeditions, Chapter 6 becomes available. Your cryptic task: find a presence lurking in Roundtable Hold. No map markers here — so explore the training grounds where the Iron Menial stands. Give him a couple of punches to reveal the Witch of the Wheel, a member of the Recluse’s coven. Talk through all her dialogue options to learn the Menial’s resting place: the mausoleum.
To reach the mausoleum, head to the low-ceilinged room below the Small Jar Bazaar, take the staircase, turn left, and enter the now-unlocked door. There, you’ll find the Menial slumped in a corner. After chatting and exhausting dialogue, you get the Bone-Like Stone key item. It doesn’t do anything yet, but it’s essential for later. Finish the Remembrance and keep clearing expeditions.
Chapter 8: The Infant and Final Battle
The last Remembrance quest unlocks after you defeat three Nightlords post-Chapter 2 and then take on Heolstor, The Night Aspect, playing as the Recluse. Note: You must defeat the other seven Nightlords before challenging Heolstor.
Heolstor is vulnerable to holy and lightning damage. Try to get weapon drops with these elements, prioritizing lightning since the Recluse’s Faith scaling supports incantations like Lightning Spear well. Avoid dragon breath attacks due to their close range and long casting time.
It’s best to team up with two allies who can keep Heolstor busy, letting you cast spells safely. The boss’s fast moves in phase two make dodging tricky, so use any passives that extend your invulnerability frames during dodges. Be ready for wide area-of-effect attacks that test your timing.
After defeating Heolstor, you’ll enter an alternate Roundtable Hold. Head to the room where you found the Vestige of Night and interact with the Infant. Then, speak with the Witch of the Wheel again. This concludes the Recluse’s Remembrance and unlocks her Remembrance skin.
