Matt Reeves Confirms Talks for The Penguin Season 2 After Cristin Milioti’s Emmy — Colin Farrell Open to Return

Cristin Milioti took home the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series for her role as Sofia Gigante in HBO’s The Penguin, and meanwhile Matt Reeves says talks are happening about a possible season 2 of the show. Reeves told Variety that he and showrunner Lauren Lefranc are in discussions about continuing the series.

Cristin Milioti’s Emmy and the show’s awards

On Sunday, Cristin Milioti won the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series for her performance as mafia scion Sofia Gigante in HBO’s The Penguin. More details about her win are available from this Hollywood Reporter story.

What Matt Reeves said about season 2

Reeves told Variety that he and Lefranc have been discussing a second season. “We love the show, and we think our cast is so incredible. The work that Lauren and the writers did was incredible. Our passion was in it, but never in our wildest dreams could we imagine it would have been received in the way that it was,” Reeves said.

He added that the creative team would need to find a story that could match the first season’s scale and stakes before moving forward. In short, talks are happening, but nothing has been finalized.

Colin Farrell and the cast

Reeves also told MTV that Colin Farrell would be willing to return for a second season, but said the writers must find the right story to bring Oswald Cobblepot back in a way that fits the show’s tone.

So, while Farrell is open to returning, the creative team has to be confident they can deliver a follow-up that lives up to season one.

How this ties into The Batman 2

Reeves said he is mainly focused on The Batman 2, which is set to begin filming next spring. He told MTV that Sofia Gigante will not appear in the second Batman film because the script was already mostly written by the time Milioti’s performance was in production.

Reeves cited difficulties fitting the character into the existing story, and so Sofia won’t be part of the next film in his Crime Saga.

Nominations, prosthetics, and release dates

The Penguin received 24 Emmy nominations overall. The series picked up eight Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for the work used to transform Colin Farrell into Oswald Cobblepot.

Additionally, The Batman 2 currently has a planned release date of October 1, 2027. Meanwhile, fans of Batman villains can look out for a Clayface movie directed by James Wilkins, scheduled for release on September 11, 2026.
