Campaign setup and premiere

The new Campaign 4 premiere was run by Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan. For this campaign, Matthew Mercer is participating as one of the players rather than acting as the primary DM. The premiere episode is the first of a four-episode overture. After that overture, the 13-player group is set to split into three parties labeled Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

Who is Sir Julien Davinos

Sir Julien Davinos is played by Matthew Mercer and was introduced in episode 1. He is identified as a member of House Davinos, which is presented as a vassal house to House Royce. Julien arrives at the wake for Thjazi Fang alongside Lady Aranessa of House Royce.

Notable on-screen connections

During the episode, Julien is shown to have a mentorship relationship with a young character named Alogar. That relationship connects him to the characters played by Aabria Iyengar (Thaisha Lloy) and Liam O’Brien (Halandil Fang), who are Alogar’s parents. Julien also speaks directly to Lady Aranessa and tells her he will “protect” her.

Events in episode 1

In the first episode, viewers saw Julien attend Thjazi Fang’s wake, interact with several other player characters, and take actions that drew visible reactions from the group. Specifically, Julien spat on Thjazi’s corpse during the wake, and he spoke with multiple characters present at the event.

Matthew Mercer as a player

Matthew Mercer has previously served as the long-running DM for Critical Role. For Campaign 4 he is appearing as a player. His past player or guest appearances include playing Dariax Zaveon in Exandria Unlimited, and he has also taken part in various one-shots and mini-campaigns, including work with Dimension 20.
