Meep City Collapses: Roblox Removes Custom Bios and Avatars — Players Drop from 24,000 to Under 150

Meep City — a once‑popular social hangout on Roblox — has lost almost all of its playerbase after the game removed custom bios and bespoke avatar options. The changes came in late August and, since then, concurrent player numbers have dropped from tens of thousands to just a few hundred at peak.

What changed

Meep City removed two features that players used to customize profiles: custom bios and custom avatars. The game previously allowed those options, along with a party feature that let players host others in their virtual homes.

Those party tools were partly removed years earlier, after reporting that parties had been used for explicit encounters. Coverage at the time noted the issue; for background, see reporting from the BBC.

Older footage showing how some players used bios to advertise ages and contacts is available here:

Similarly, examples of custom avatars being used for extreme displays were shared publicly:

Player numbers and timeline

According to ROMonitor, Meep City’s concurrent player high dropped from about 24,000 at its peak to only a few hundred after the recent changes. Currently, average concurrent users are reported at under 150, and average playtime has declined as well. See the data on ROMonitor.

Some public posts documented a clear fall in active users shortly after the custom features were removed:

Players and commenters also discussed Meep City’s decline on community forums; one Reddit thread collects reactions and memories of the game. For example, see community comments on Reddit.

Roblox moderation and context

Roblox has faced increased scrutiny this year, including lawsuits and government action that argue the platform must do more to protect children. In response, Roblox published statements about planned security and moderation changes, and the company said it would work with developers to address problems before taking games down.

Roblox’s safety team member Eliza Jacobs said: “We always want to work with our developers first and give them an opportunity to make changes to the design and see if that works to mitigate bad behavior,” and added, “That would open up an abuse vector,” and later, “That doesn’t seem fair at all.”

Roblox has also posted official responses about legal actions and platform changes; see reporting from Roblox Corporation and local reporting such as KPLC-TV.

Roblox additionally discussed moderation approach and examples in a company video explaining policy changes. That video is available here:

Developer and platform response

Neither Roblox nor Meep City creator Alex Newtron responded to press requests about the recent removal of custom bios and avatars. There has been no public statement from Newtron explaining the changes.

Roblox reportedly sent questionnaires to some developers asking them to confirm their experiences meet platform guidelines; developers who do not respond by a stated deadline could face restrictions. For more about those developer checks, see developer discussions collected on Reddit.

Community reaction

Players were surprised by the sudden changes, and screenshots of confused users circulated the day after the features were pulled:

Some Meep City players protested other Roblox moderation decisions in the game, with usernames referencing a banned user known as Schlepp. Coverage of the controversy around that user and related community actions appears in Rolling Stone.

Protest posts were also visible in public timelines:

Meanwhile, some players and community members started tracking users they considered problematic; one such effort was shared publicly:

Finally, for historical context: Meep City was widely popular in 2018 and was compared in mainstream outlets to significant mobile hits. For retrospective coverage on the game’s early success, see Business Insider.
