MindsEye Studio Faces Major Layoffs After Turbulent Game Launch – What’s Next for Build a Rocket Boy?

Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind the much-hyped MindsEye, is reportedly preparing for a big round of layoffs after what can only be described as a rocky launch. If you’ve been following the game’s journey, you probably know things haven’t gone smoothly, and now, according to IGN, over 100 jobs might be at risk. Ouch.

  • MindsEye’s rough launch leads to potential layoffs at Build a Rocket Boy
  • UK labor law requires a 45-day consultation for big layoffs
  • Up to a third of the UK staff could be affected
  • Future of the Everywhere platform is uncertain
  • MindsEye is available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X

Layoffs looming after a tough debut

So, what’s actually happening? An anonymous source told IGN that Build a Rocket Boy is starting the layoff process, but there’s no official number yet. It could be 100 people, or even more. According to UK labor law (details here), when a company plans to let go of 100+ employees, it has to begin a 45-day consultation period. That process reportedly kicked off on Monday, June 23.

How many jobs are on the line?

Build a Rocket Boy has around 300 staff in the UK. If these numbers are accurate, we’re talking about a potential reduction of a third—or more—of the UK team. The company also employs about 200 people outside the UK, but it’s still unclear if those roles are at risk.

MindsEye’s launch: A bumpy ride

It’s no secret that MindsEye’s launch didn’t go as planned. The game hit the market full of bugs, which led to refunds from Sony—a situation that brings back memories of Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled release. Even streamers paid to promote the game had a tough time showing it off. The studio quickly dropped a hotfix and shared a roadmap, hoping to steer MindsEye toward a more stable and playable state.

What about Everywhere?

Here’s where it gets even more interesting. MindsEye actually started out as a game within Build a Rocket Boy’s upcoming platform, Everywhere. But that platform still hasn’t launched, and with layoffs looming, it’s anyone’s guess what happens next.

For now, MindsEye is out on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, but the future of both the game and the studio is looking pretty uncertain.
