Nearly 1 Million Fortnite Players to Receive Refunds—FTC Opens Claims for Unwanted Purchases

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is sending out $126 million in refunds to nearly a million Fortnite players who were charged for items they didn’t want. If you or your child have ever been surprised by an unwanted skin or emote in your Fortnite account, this news might be for you! Plus, the FTC is reopening the claims process, so even more players can apply for a refund.
- FTC refunds $126 million to Fortnite players
- Almost 1 million gamers affected
- Claims process is open again
- Eligibility for unwanted or unauthorized charges
- Refunds available by check or PayPal
Why is the FTC refunding Fortnite players?
This refund wave is part of a 2022 lawsuit settlement with Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite. The FTC accused Epic of using “deceptive practices” to trick players into making purchases they didn’t want. According to the FTC’s official statement, Epic Games “unlawfully charged players for unwanted purchases, let children rack up unauthorized charges without their parents’ permission, and blocked some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing their purchased content.”
Who can get a refund?
You’re eligible if you:
- Were charged in-game currency for unwanted items between January 2017 and September 2022
- Had a child make charges on your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
- Had your account locked after disputing wrongful charges with your bank or card company between January 2017 and September 2022
If you’re under 18, your parent or guardian can file a claim for you. Players can choose to get their refund as a check (which needs to be cashed within 90 days) or through PayPal (must be redeemed within 30 days).
How to claim your Fortnite refund
Fortnite players who think they qualify have until July 9 to file a claim. You can do it easily on the FTC’s official website. It’s quick, and you might get some money back for those unwanted V-Bucks purchases.
More details on the Epic Games settlement
This isn’t the first round of refunds from Epic. Back in December 2024, the FTC paid out $72 million to over 629,000 Fortnite players. So far, almost 1.6 million people have received refunds as part of this settlement, and that number is set to grow with the reopened claims process.
Remember, this settlement also means Epic Games now has to get clear consent before charging users and can’t block your account if you dispute unauthorized charges. If you think you were affected, don’t miss your chance to claim what’s yours!
