Netflix Adds 28 Years Later — Danny Boyle & Alex Garland’s Sequel to 28 Days Later Is Now Streaming

28 Years Later is now available to stream on Netflix. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film arrives after a summer 2025 theatrical run and continues the story set in the world of 28 Days Later (2002).
Quick summary
28 Years Later is a direct sequel to 28 Days Later and follows a new set of characters decades after the original outbreak. It centers on a 12-year-old named Spike and the island community that raised him. The film explores how survivors organize life after the outbreaks and how a new generation grows up in that world.
Who made it and who stars
The movie was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Main cast members include Alfie Williams as Spike, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie (Spike’s father), and Jodie Comer as Isla (Spike’s mother).
Story setup
The plot opens on an island colony that formed after Britain’s quarantine. Residents live in a regimented, commune-style system. Jamie brings Spike ashore for a ceremonial first zombie kill, which is part of the community’s rites of passage. Along the way, the group encounters infected people and an unusual case involving a pregnant infected individual who gives birth to an uninfected baby.
Visual style and production
Unlike the 2002 original, which used early digital video aesthetics, 28 Years Later was shot largely with iPhones. As a result, the film presents a more hyperreal visual approach with brighter colors and sharper image processing.
Furthermore, Boyle and Garland returned as director and writer, respectively, reuniting the original creative team for this installment. The movie uses a new cast and a different visual approach while remaining within the same franchise timeline.
Release and sequel info
28 Years Later had a theatrical release in summer 2025 and is now streaming on Netflix. In addition, a follow-up titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled for January 2026. Producers have also indicated another film may follow depending on the performance of The Bone Temple.
