Series background

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance franchise began in 2006 with an isometric action-RPG that let players assemble teams of Marvel heroes. Its 2009 follow-up, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, adapted the Civil War storyline and offered two separate campaigns tied to players’ choices. In that game, choosing one side made some heroes unavailable in that same playthrough, which encouraged replay.

Meanwhile, the original games were later removed from some digital stores. Coverage of that delisting is available from Eurogamer and Game Rant.

2019 revival: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

In 2019, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order arrived as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. The game was developed by Team Ninja and published by Nintendo. It centers on players forming rosters of Marvel characters to fight through levels, face boss encounters, and use linked team abilities. Additionally, the Fantastic Four were made available in the game via paid DLC.

Availability and current status

As of now, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has not been ported to other platforms. Also, there has been no official announcement of a fourth mainline Marvel Ultimate Alliance title from Nintendo or other publishers.

Comic connections

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance games have often used large, cross-character story beats. For example, the 2009 game adapted the Civil War event. Separately, the 2015 Secret Wars miniseries by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić depicts a fractured “Battleworld” overseen by Doctor Doom, who serves as a central antagonist in that comic event. Coverage of Doctor Doom’s role and power set can be found at Screen Rant.

Summary

In short: the Ultimate Alliance series started in 2006, saw a notable sequel in 2009 that used the Civil War story, and returned in 2019 with a Team Ninja-developed Switch exclusive. Earlier entries have been removed from some digital stores, and there is currently no official word from publishers about a new numbered entry.
