Nintendo Switch 2 Smashes US Sales Records with 1.6 Million Units in First Month

Switch 2 Breaks Records as Fastest-Selling Console in US History
The Nintendo Switch 2 has just launched in June and is already making waves as the fastest-selling video game hardware device in United States history. With a staggering 1.6 million units sold in its first month, it has surpassed the PlayStation 4’s launch record of 1.1 million units back in November 2013.
- Switch 2 sets record for highest launch-month sales in the US
- Console content spending boosted by Switch 2 release
- 82% of Switch 2 buyers picked up Mario Kart World
- Overall gaming spending in the US up 22% year-over-year
- Upcoming bundles and restocks expected to keep momentum going
Strong Sales Drive Growth in Gaming Market
The release of the Switch 2 has given a significant boost to video game content spending, which increased by 6% to $4.4 billion compared to the same period last year. About 19% of this growth is attributed to console content, largely thanks to the Switch 2’s launch. Even though the Switch 2 was June’s best-selling gaming hardware both in units and dollars, the PlayStation 5 still holds the title for the best-selling console year-to-date.
Mario Kart World Dominates Among Buyers
Interestingly, 82% of Nintendo Switch 2 owners purchased Mario Kart World, either as a physical copy or bundled with the console, excluding standalone digital sales. This shows the strong appeal of the game as a companion title for the new system.
Overall Gaming Industry Sees Healthy Growth
The successful launch of the Switch 2 has contributed to a 22% increase in total spending on gaming hardware, content, and accessories in the US, reaching $5.7 billion. Despite being early in the year, 2025 is only 2% behind 2024’s pace of $27.5 billion in total gaming revenue, with five months still to go.
Other Factors Fueling the Market
Besides the Switch 2, several other releases and events have helped boost the market, including Elden Ring: Nightreign, Stellar Blade’s PC launch, Pokémon Go Fest, the debut of Death Stranding 2, and the Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk 2077.
What’s Next for Nintendo Switch 2?
After selling out online, retailers are busy restocking Switch 2 consoles. With the holiday season approaching, Nintendo plans to launch new bundles like the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A edition, which is expected to drive even more sales and keep the momentum strong.
