Peacemaker Star Teases Checkmate Spinoff — Season 3 May Be Dead, Says Steve Agee
Steve Agee, who plays John Economos on Peacemaker, says the most likely next stop for the show’s ensemble isn’t a third season of Peacemaker but a spinoff built around **Checkmate**, the agency the team forms in season 2’s finale.
Checkmate spinoff possibility
After Peacemaker season 2 ended on a heavy cliffhanger, James Gunn suggested on the show’s official podcast that a third season might not happen. In addition, he has said the storyline begun in season 2 may continue elsewhere, but fans should not expect the cliffhanger’s resolution to arrive in the upcoming Superman project.

What Steve Agee said
Agee told Polygon that the most natural next step for the group of misfits known as the 11th Street Kids would be a show focused on Checkmate. He added that he hasn’t had detailed talks with James Gunn about the cast’s future, and he’s “stoked just to have a job!”
Waller spinoff status
In earlier plans for the relaunched DC Universe, a Waller series starring Viola Davis was discussed. However, Agee said that discussion appears to have stalled; he reported hearing nothing about the Waller project “in at least six to 10 months.” Still, he noted there is a “high possibility” Amanda Waller could reappear, since Leota Adebayo’s storyline is closely tied to her mother.
Economos’ possible role and hopes
About his own character, Agee expects Economos to remain a supporting figure rather than a central superhero. He said, “I would love Economos to serve the role Agent Coulson serves in Marvel,” meaning a recurring utility player who helps when needed.
He also expressed a personal wish for Economos: “I’d love for Economos to get a love interest,” and added that an earlier plan had him in a comedic moment that didn’t make the cut.
Agee noted that while Economos probably won’t become a lead hero, he’s happy to be a reliable, recurring support character.

Both seasons of Peacemaker are available to stream on HBO Max. If Checkmate moves forward as a spinoff, the new series would likely keep several Peacemaker regulars involved and tie into existing DCU threads.
