How to Unlock Every Free Character in Persona 5: The Phantom X
Persona 5: The Phantom X kicks off with you playing as Nagisa Kamisiro, also known as Wonder. You’ll meet new allies as you explore the Metaverse, finish quests, and participate in special events. Let’s break down how to add each free character to your roster!
Nagisa Kamisiro (Wonder) – Your Main Character
Right from the start, you’ll have Nagisa Kamisiro in your party. He’s unique because his role and attribute change depending on which Persona he’s using. His default Persona is Jánošík, but you can swap to others as you progress. You don’t need to do anything to unlock him—he’s yours from the get-go.
Lufel (Cattle) – The First Free Ally
Your first companion, Lufel (aka Cattle), joins after you enter Mementos for the second time. He’s your team’s healer and Metaverse expert, bringing Fire skills with his Persona, Robroy. If you liked Morgana in the original Persona 5, you’ll feel right at home with Cattle.
Kotone Montagne (Mont) – Ice Assassin
After Lufel, you’ll unlock Kotone Montagne (Mont) through a tutorial ticket you get from Merope. The ticket is automatically used, and voilà—Mont joins your crew as a single-target ice damage dealer. Her Persona Duo is Terpsichore, and her backstory as a former figure skater adds some nice flavor to the team.
Motoha Arai (Closer) – Your Electric Sweeper
As you make your way through Kiuichi’s Palace, you’ll meet Motoha Arai (Closer). She officially joins after a key battle in the Palace, bringing AOE electric damage with her Persona, Awilda. She’s one of the first real Phantom Thieves to join you, and her baseball skills come in handy!
Kayo Tomiyama (Okyann) – Off-field Support
Clear Technician stage 1 of the Velvet Trials, and you’ll unlock Kayo Okyann. She’s a navigator, providing buffs and support from the sidelines. Her Persona Duo is Cleodora, and she’s got a friendly, helpful vibe as a former-gyaru housewife in Nagisa’s neighborhood.
Tomoko Noge (Mako) – Psychokinesis Strategist
Push through to Technician stage 6 of the Velvet Trials to get Tomoko Noge (Mako) on your team. She’s a buff support using Psychokinesis, and her Persona Duo is Prosymna. Tomoko is one of Motoha’s best friends, so you’ll see some fun interactions between the two.
Shun Kano (Soy) – Defensive Guardian
During the “Outcome of Pride” main mission, Shun Kano (Soy) will help you in battle as you explore Miyazawa’s Palace. To unlock him permanently, interact with him on the school’s rooftop. He’s your ice attribute defender, working part-time at a ramen shop and dreaming of becoming a master chef. His Persona is Mandrin.
Plan One Rewards – Classic Persona 5 Characters for Free
After you complete all seven steps of Plan One, you get to pick one classic Persona 5 character to unlock for free: Ryuji Sakamoto (Skull), Morgana (Mona), or Ann Takamaki (Panther). These fan-favorites are also available in the Newcomer contract banner, but there you’d need to draw 50 contracts—so this is your best bet for a freebie!
Ryuji Sakamoto (Skull) – Physical Assassin
Ryuji Sakamoto (Skull) is a single-target physical damage dealer with his Persona, Captain Kidd. He’s the loyal right-hand man to the Persona 5 protagonist and a great pick if you want some classic power on your side.
Morgana (Mona) – Wind Healer
If you prefer healing and wind support, go for Morgana (Mona). This Metaverse expert brings Zorro as his Persona and supports your squad with crucial heals and buffs.
Ann Takamaki (Panther) – Fire Sweeper
Last but not least, Ann Takamaki (Panther) is your AOE fire sweeper with her Persona, Carmen. She’s a staple for anyone who loves flashy attacks and wants to relive some Persona 5 nostalgia.
