Overview
Unko Technica bills itself as a retro poopy precision platformer. The player controls a poop character, and the objective in each stage is to find a toilet. The word unko means “poop” in Japanese, which the developer uses directly in the title.
Gameplay details
The game includes 150 retro-inspired stages. Controls are intentionally minimal: there is a single jump button. In addition, the game features boss fights and a shop where players can buy skins and customize their poop characters.
The levels use neon color schemes and motion graphics made of moving and morphing geometric shapes. The game also uses an in-game currency called UN-KOINS, which players collect to unlock tougher stages and buy items in the shop.
Press release excerpt
A press release from Phoenixx Inc. included a playful, quoted description of mechanics and challenges. The release reads exactly:
“Time turds carefully, as one wrong means starting over from the beginning of the level. Kerplunk on top of bouncy bubbles to fling feces to new heights, hit the point of return while crossing crumbling platforms, and smear dung onto on/off switches to activate hidden paths. Collect UN-KOINS along the way to buy tougher stages where shi — things really start hitting the fan.”
Demo and release
The demo is available to play on Steam now. The full game is scheduled to launch on PC via Steam on November 19.
Awards
Unko Technica won top honors at Bandai Namco’s GYAAR Studio 2023 Indie Game Contest.
