Play as a Walking Lighthouse — Double Fine’s Keeper Arrives on Game Pass Oct. 17

Double Fine’s Keeper puts players in control of a living, walking lighthouse. Developed by Lee Petty with Double Fine Productions, Keeper appeared during Gamescom Opening Night Live and combines exploration, puzzles, and a quiet, wordless story.

  • Who you play as and how the lighthouse moves and interacts.
  • Key gameplay elements seen in the preview, including puzzles and time manipulation.
  • The game’s quiet, wordless tone and its inspiration.
  • Release date and platforms.

What you play as

Keeper casts you as a lighthouse that wakes up and grows legs. It travels across strange landscapes while a bird companion rides on or near it. Early footage shows the lighthouse shining its light to repel small creatures and illuminating a living tree to remove its roots.

Gameplay details

During a preview, the lighthouse was seen doing more than walking and shining light. For example, it can pick up items, solve environmental puzzles, and manipulate time to change the bird back into an egg. At another point, the lighthouse enters a pale valley with pink mist where it gains the ability to jump and float. The preview also included unusual fauna, such as a flying whale.

Puzzle and movement variety

The game mixes slow, deliberate movement with occasional platforming moments. Meanwhile, puzzles often require using light, interacting with objects, and timing to progress. The presentation so far suggests a focus on atmosphere and environmental puzzles rather than combat.

Tone, story, and inspiration

Keeper contains no human characters and uses almost no dialogue. According to coverage, the game was inspired by Lee Petty’s hikes during the COVID‑19 pandemic; that experience influenced a world without people. Consequently, the story is conveyed through observation and environmental detail rather than text or spoken lines.

“The story is open to interpretation,” he said. “It centers around the bond between the lighthouse and the bird, and how that character relationship develops.”

Release and availability

Keeper is scheduled for release on October 17. It will launch on Windows PC and Xbox Series X, and it will be available on Game Pass at release.
