Play The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered in Chronological Order Now – New Mode, Skins & Trophies Unlocked!

Play The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Story in Chronological Order

Naughty Dog surprised fans with a free update for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered that lets you experience the game’s story in chronological order. This new mode rearranges the narrative so you follow Ellie’s and Abby’s journeys as they happen, rather than the original non-linear storytelling.

  • Chronological mode rearranges the story for a linear experience
  • New Uncharted 4-inspired skins for Tommy and Joel unlocked after completion
  • Additional trophies added for the new mode
  • Performance improvements and bug fixes for PS5 and PC

Why Chronological Mode Matters

The original Last of Us Part 2 story was told in a unique way, jumping back and forth between Ellie and Abby’s perspectives to build suspense and deepen the narrative. With this update, you can now play the story straight through, which Naughty Dog believes will give players “even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative.” However, Jonathon Dornbush, Naughty Dog’s editorial content manager, suggests that new players should first experience the game in its original form before trying the chronological mode.

This update is available now and adds new trophies for those who want to collect them all. Plus, after finishing the chronological story, you unlock new skins for Tommy and Joel inspired by Uncharted 4. These skins can be used in the roguelike No Return mode, adding some fresh style to your gameplay.

More Than Just a Story Update

Besides the new mode and skins, the update brings bug fixes and performance improvements for both PlayStation 5 and Windows PC versions, ensuring smoother gameplay overall.

The Last of Us Part 2 originally launched on PlayStation 4 in 2020, got remastered for PS5 in early 2024, and came to PC later that year. In 2025, Naughty Dog bundled it with the remake of the first game in The Last of Us Part 1 Complete Collection. The studio continues to revisit this beloved franchise while also working on new projects like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and another unannounced game.
