Pokémon Go Raises Level Cap to 80 — New Daily Adventure Egg Hands Out 10,000 XP

Pokémon Go’s trainer leveling is being rebalanced on Oct. 15, and that means a higher level cap, new rewards, and a fresh way to earn XP through a Daily Adventure Egg. Niantic says the update should make progression feel more rewarding while keeping Pokémon themselves capped at level 50.

Leveling system changes

Starting Wednesday, Oct. 15, the trainer level cap in Pokémon Go increases from 50 to 80. However, Pokémon themselves still max out at level 50, so the change affects trainer progression, rewards, and cosmetics rather than Pokémon power ceilings.

Also, the tasks that previously gated progress from levels 41 through 50 will be moved to the new upper tiers — specifically to levels 71 through 80 — so the structure of milestone tasks shifts upward.

On Monday, Pokémon Go developer Niantic detailed how the new leveling system will work, and confirmed some protections for existing players during the transition.

New XP requirements

Below are the updated total XP amounts required at key milestone levels under the new system. These are total XP thresholds, not the XP needed between levels.

Key milestone totals

Level 10: 48,000 total XP
Level 20: 258,000 total XP
Level 30: 1,083,000 total XP
Level 40: 3,953,000 total XP
Level 50: 12,753,000 total XP
Level 60: 34,353,000 total XP
Level 70: 85,853,000 total XP
Level 80: 203,353,000 total XP

For context, the current requirement to reach level 50 was about 176 million XP under the old progression system. The new totals re-space progression and add rewards as trainers climb higher.

Rewards and cosmetics

As players level up to the new cap, Niantic adds a mix of tangible and cosmetic rewards. In addition to increases in Pokémon and item storage, rewards include avatar items unlocked at specific levels.

Avatar items by level (selected)

Level 25: Poké Ball Cap
Level 30: Poké Ball Shoes
Level 35: Poké Ball Jacket
Level 40: Great Ball Cap
Level 45: Great Ball Shoes
Level 50: Great Ball Jacket
Level 55: Ultra Ball Cap
Level 60: Ultra Ball Shoes
Level 65: Ultra Ball Jacket
Level 71: Level 71 Shoes
Level 73: Level 73 Shades
Level 75: Level 75 Pants
Level 77: Level 77 Pose
Level 79: Level 79 Hairstyle (Short) and Level 79 Hairstyle (Long)
Level 80: Level 80 Jacket

Additionally, reaching level 70 increases the chance of becoming Lucky Friends when exchanging gifts, which can help with getting Lucky Pokémon.

Daily Adventure Egg details

Niantic also introduced the Daily Adventure Egg as a new XP source. Each Daily Adventure Egg will hatch a Pokémon and grant 10,000 XP for incubating it.

Importantly, each Daily Adventure Egg requires only 1 km of exploration to hatch and it does not use the player’s regular incubators. Instead, when a trainer logs in for the first time each day, the Daily Adventure Egg is automatically placed into its own incubator.

Rollout and notes from Niantic

The new leveling system goes live on Oct. 15. Niantic has said that players who are already level 23 or above will automatically gain at least one level during the transition, and no players will lose levels when the system changes.

Finally, while trainer progression and cosmetics expand, remember that Pokémon level caps remain unchanged and the main effect is on the trainer experience curve and rewards distribution.
