PS5 Price Shock: Sony Adds $50 to Every U.S. Console Starting Aug. 21

Sony is raising the price of the PlayStation 5 across the board in the U.S., the company announced Wednesday. Starting Aug. 21, all PS5 consoles will cost $50 more, a move Sony says is due to “a challenging economic environment.”

    • What the price change is and when it takes effect.
  • The new U.S. recommended retail prices for each PS5 model.
  • Which items are not affected and where prices remain the same.
  • How this fits with recent industry price moves and prior regional increases.

What changed

Effective Aug. 21, Sony will raise the U.S. recommended retail price of every PlayStation 5 model by $50. Moreover, Sony Interactive Entertainment VP of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis said the change is due to “a challenging economic environment.” The company announced the update on Wednesday, and the new prices are reflected below.

New U.S. prices

  • PlayStation 5$549.99 (previously $499.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition$499.99 (previously $449.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Pro$749.99 (previously $699.99)

What didn’t change

Sony says it is not raising prices on PS5 accessories. For example, the DualSense controller and the PlayStation Portal remain at their current prices. Furthermore, Sony is not applying these console price increases outside the U.S. at this time.

Context

This move follows similar price increases from other console makers: Microsoft raised prices on its Xbox consoles, and Nintendo increased the price of original Switch consoles. Additionally, Sony had already raised PS5 prices in other regions — including Europe, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand — earlier this year. Thus, the August change brings U.S. pricing in line with broader industry and regional trends.
