Rick and Morty Writer’s Haunted Hotel Trailer Drops — Netflix’s New Horror-Sitcom Brings Ghosts, Demons and Family Chaos

Netflix is expanding its adult animation slate with Haunted Hotel, a new series from Rick and Morty writer Matt Roller. The show is a 10-episode horror-comedy that follows the Freeling family as they run the extremely haunted Undervale Hotel. It blends family-sitcom beats with supernatural threats, and it arrives on Netflix on Sept. 19.

  • What the series is about, who’s in the cast, the episode count and release date.
  • How the show mixes sitcom elements with horror tropes.
  • Background on the creator and how Netflix acquired the series.

What Haunted Hotel is

Haunted Hotel centers on the Freeling family and the Undervale Hotel. Katherine Freeling, played by Eliza Coupe, inherits the hotel from her brother Nathan. However, Nathan (played by Will Forte) is dead and now appears as a ghost who still wants to be involved in running the place. Katherine is recently divorced and moves in with her children Ben and Esther, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo and Natalie Palamides, respectively. Meanwhile, the family ends up caring for Abaddon, a demon trapped in the body of a child from the 1700s, played by Jimmi Simpson.

Tone and structure

The series mixes everyday family situations — such as school projects, dating and parties — with horror plots that include possession, slashers and tentacled monsters. In short, the show combines sitcom rhythms and genre set pieces. As a result, it aims to deliver both domestic comedy and horror set pieces across its run of episodes.
