Rocket Raccoon Wears a Green Lantern Ring — Then Gambles It Away in Deadpool/Batman #1

On Sept. 17, Marvel and DC published Deadpool/Batman #1, marking the companies’ first crossover in decades. Alongside the main team-up story, the issue includes several short backup pieces — and one of them, a two-page backup called “Rocket Has a Green Lantern Ring Now”, got a lot of attention for putting Rocket Raccoon in an unexpected role.

Rocket Has a Green Lantern Ring Now (backup)
The two-page backup is written by Al Ewing with art by Dike Ruan. In it, DC’s Guardians of the Universe and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy agree to a cultural exchange program, and Hal Jordan tags along with the Guardians of the Galaxy — but not before lending Rocket his Green Lantern ring.
In the strip, Hal Jordan says the line: “Brightest day, blackest night. Yada yada. Green flame on!” and Rocket dons a Green Lantern-style costume that visually recalls Guy Gardner’s look. I mean, just look at this guy:
Rather than use the ring to fight cosmic threats, Rocket bets the ring at a casino and then robs that same casino. The backup also includes a surprise appearance by Green Arrow, who pulls the ring out from under the casino’s mob owners with what reads like Robin Hood-style intentions — an action Rocket does not agree with.
Main Deadpool and Batman story
The main story in Deadpool/Batman #1 is by Zeb Wells with art by Greg Capullo. It pairs Deadpool and Batman against the Joker. This is the headline story that anchors the crossover issue.
Other backup stories in the issue
Besides Rocket’s short piece, the issue contains several other light backup beats. For example, Krypto and Jeff the Land Shark play ice cap volleyball. Additionally, a short scene pairs Captain America and Wonder Woman; more details can be found on this Screen Rant page. There is also a sequence where Green Arrow and Daredevil fight ninjas on rooftops.
The issue includes a joking aside about a separate character mash-up; the original piece compares Rocket’s cameo to “this Wolverine/Lobo abomination,” which is discussed at this Screen Rant article.
